Postpartum back and neck pain doesn’t have to be normal.

Postpartum back and neck pain usually isn’t caused by one bad movement.

It’s caused by hours of repetitive positions layered on top of a body that’s still recovering.

Feeding, holding, rocking, carrying — all of it adds up.

Small adjustments reduce the total load on your body:

🤰 Set yourself up before feeding instead of adjusting mid-feed

🤰 Change positions frequently to avoid sustained tension

🤰 Use external support so muscles don’t have to work constantly

You don’t need perfect posture — you need variety and support throughout the day.

If these changes aren’t helping, there may be underlying issues that need a full assessment from a Doctor of Physical Therapy who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum care.

What I would tell postpartum moms if I wasn’t afraid to hurt their feelings:

Sleep and hydration are non-negotiable for postpartum recovery. Coffee cannot replace rest, and dehydration can amplify fatigue, irritability, and overall feelings of “blah.” Your body literally needs sleep to heal from childbirth, recover energy, and support hormonal balance.

Even short naps, staying hydrated throughout the day, and prioritizing rest when possible improve mood, strength, and overall recovery. These small lifestyle habits form the foundation for all other aspects of postpartum health — from movement to strength to long-term joint and pelvic health.
