"How they work to stop coronavirus droplets -- and which myths you should ignore
LINDSAY KALTER | NEWS SERVICE OF BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF MASSACHUSETTS
Face masks are among the most effective weapons against the spread of COVID-19, according to scientists and doctors – yet, confusion and myths persist about how helpful and safe they are.
In the past several months, new research has shown how well masks work, whether they pose health risks, and how they should be worn.
The consensus?
“Masks are critical to our success when it comes to suppressing COVID and limiting the impact of the pandemic,” said Dr. Ashley Yeats, a former ER physician and vice president of medical operations for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. “In addition to washing hands, avoiding touching your face with your hands, and physical distancing, it is one of the most important measures that can be taken.”
DR. ASHLEY YEATS
Do masks save lives?
Unequivocally, yes. A model from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation shows masks could prevent between 17,742 and 28,030 deaths across the United States between July and October.
In fact, earlier mandates might have prevented thousands of deaths, according to a statistical analysis from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and British Columbia’s Vancouver School of Economics. The analysis concludes 40,000 lives would have been saved in two months if employees for public-facing businesses had been required to wear masks – and had adhered – starting on April 1.
How do masks reduce risk?
“It became apparent pretty quickly that masks reduce the risk of viral transmission,” Yeats said. “There is mounting scientific evidence of this.”
Coughing, sneezing and even speaking ejects tiny, often imperceptible droplets from the mouth and nose. Using a mask restricts the reach of these droplets. A June paper in the journal Physics of Fluids explained that a cough can cause droplets to be expelled 12 feet within about 50 seconds. With a properly fitting homemade cotton mask comprised of multiple layers, those droplets only traveled about 2.5 inches.
A May study published in the New England Journal of Medicine used a high-speed video showing that hundreds of droplets were generated from the mouth when saying a simple phrase, but most of those droplets were blocked when covered with a washcloth. An April study in Nature Medicine found surgical masks drastically reduced transmission of both cold and flu droplets.
Can masks reduce oxygen levels?
“There is absolutely no reduction of oxygen levels by putting on a mask or an N95 mask. The oxygen in the air is coming in in the same concentration as without a mask,” Yeats said, though he noted some wearers may have a propensity to feelings of claustrophobia.
A recent in-depth analysis from Brigham Young University states that masks can be safely and comfortably worn by anyone other than those who cannot remove it on their own, such as the unconscious or children under the age of 2, or those with certain acute, preexisting conditions.
Many arguments against masks center around low oxygen and overabundance of carbon dioxide. However, the only documented cases of these issues occurred in patients who have acute conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or end-stage renal disease, who can have difficulty breathing when they wear an N95 respirator mask for long periods.
How should masks be worn?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to wash their hands before putting on a mask. It should be placed over the nose and mouth before securing it under the chin. The mask should have a snug fit against the face without impairing one’s breathing. Wearing a mask underneath the chin, or on the mouth without covering the nose, will not prevent viral spread.
“A mask that's just around your mouth is not protecting you nor others. The most effective masking is a form-fitting, good fit around your cheeks and nose,” Yeats said. “A mask that looks like a saggy diaper is not going to do anything.”
Removing the mask carefully is also important; the CDC recommends untying the strings or stretching the ear loops, then handling only by the material behind the ears. Be careful not to touch the eyes, nose or mouth when removing it. ""

Air travel can be stressful.
Add a volatile pandemic, and the experience can be downright frightening. In many ways, now is a great time to fly. Why? Consider these reasons:
1. Air travel (for the time being) can be healthy for your financial fitness. Airlines are eager to fill seats so whether you prefer first class or basic economy, your purchase of an airline ticket is virtually risk-free as airlines waive change fees and allow you to cancel altogether. Be sure to check with your airline directly since travel agencies may not have up-to-date information on these policies.
2. Your airport experience will be unprecedented. It's true. You will have to wear a mask at most U.S. airports and should expect certain changes in airport operations such as TSA entry points and terminal and gate assignments (some airlines have moved). Boarding procedures may also differ from what you are used to, but there are some nice upsides. For example, TSA wait times are almost non-existent and boarding is much faster, making it likely that you'll depart on-time, if not early. Automobile traffic at airports has fallen sharply and lines for car-rental shuttle busses are very short if they exist at all.
3. Your airplane is cleaner than ever. This is a long-overdue action, but airlines are cleaning aircraft cabins diligently these days using state-of-the-art technology. Methods include electrostatic spraying, fogging and UV light. Passengers receive sanitizing wipes, and crew on some airlines are empowered to bring cleaning crews back onboard if strict checklist measures are not met.
4. Window, aisle or both? Airlines are following social distancing practices that will improve the travel experience for those who have seat preferences. Middle seats are blocked (though families and associates may be seated together), and lower passenger volumes are keeping passengers spaced more comfortably. Although you should not expect a whole row to yourself each leg of the way, you will have more space. It also is possible to secure coveted overhead bin or under-seat spaces for carry-ons that may have been elusive in the past.
5. Arrive in style. With international travel much more limited these days, airlines are deploying wide-bodied aircraft on domestic flights. These larger airplanes facilitate social distancing and include more room for walking, inter-aisle hallways for stretching and amenities and other features that smaller aircraft do not have.
Your decision to fly these days is a personal one. The airline industry very much wants your business and is working hard to get it. Consider these five reasons to be something of a "silver lining" to the COVID-19 thundercloud and enjoy your next flight. It may be a very long time before you see some of these perks again.

TO ALL: NEW INFO OUT ABOUT POSSIBLE VECTOR OF TRANSMISSION. BE AWARE.
Covid 19 and Cats Transmission
"The cats with no previous infection were cohoused with the inoculated cats on day 1. Two days later (day 3), one of the cats with no previous infection had infectious virus detected in a nasal swab specimen, and 5 days later, virus was detected in all three cats that were cohoused with the inoculated cats (Figure 1). Virus titers in the cats that were cohoused with the inoculated cats peaked at 4.5 log10 plaque-forming units per milliliter, and virus shedding lasted 4 to 5 days (Figure 1). No virus was detected in any of the re**al swabs tested. Although there have been reports of symptomatic infected cats, none of the cats in our study showed any symptoms, including abnormal body temperature, substantial weight loss (Fig. S1), or conjunctivitis. All the animals had IgG antibody titers between 1:5120 and 1:20,480 on day 24 after the initial inoculation.
With reports of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to domestic cats1 and to tigers and lions at the Bronx Zoo,4 coupled with our data showing the ease of transmission between domestic cats, there is a public health need to recognize and further investigate the potential chain of human–cat–human transmission. This is of particular importance given the potential for SARS-CoV-2 transmission between family members in households with cats while living under “shelter-in-place” orders. In 2016, an H7N2 influenza outbreak in New York City cat shelters5 highlighted the public health implications of cat-to-human transmission to workers in animal shelters. Moreover, cats may be a silent intermediate host of SARS-CoV-2, because infected cats may not show any appreciable symptoms that might be recognized by their owners. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines for pet owners regarding SARS-CoV-2 (www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/animals.html. opens in new tab). Given the need to stop the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic through various mechanisms, including breaking transmission chains, a better understanding of the role cats may play in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to humans is needed."
