Genealogical Principles (7-week online course via Boston University)

Completion of online course with final grade of B- .

NOTE: This online course was a gift from my mother. This online course took place from May 11, 2021 to June 28, 2021. I never had any formal training in genealogy (up until now).

For well over 30 years I have completed many family histories on numerous families. In June 2008, as Archivist for the Hingham Historical Society, I taught a Genealogy Workshop Class on the 2nd floor of the Historical Society which was attended by 11 students from Hingham and nearby communities. From 2005 until 2009 I was Archivist and Genealogist for the HHS. Completed genealogical research on Litchfield, Trowbridge, and Cushing families, property on 68 and 74 School Street. During 2009 I was Private Genealogist Consultant to continue on genealogy research for Meg Kenagy from Portland, Oregon (referred by Suzanne Buchanan Executive Director at Hingham Historical Society). Another major accomplishment: Ongoing research (since 1993 to present) on Tuttle Family from Tuttleville, Hingham, MA. Photograph of Tuttle Family (portrait originally purchased by Hingham Historical Society, 2008). Investigated, solved, verified, & documented final identification as James King Tuttle and wife Henrietta Simpson. Discovered major breakthrough made in 2010 on Tuttle Family and connection to Simpson Family, and Massasoit, "the Great Chief Sachem".Tuttle Family and Tuttleville, Hingham Research on Tuttle Family (which was originally started back in 1993) with approval from the late Robert Green (d. 2013) who wanted me (and only me) --to work on the Tuttle Family History, and the history and origin of Tuttleville, Hingham, MA. Recognized for my genealogy work, as Guest of Honor, at Simpson/Tuttle Reunion (Whitman, MA).

About the Genealogist

Valerie A. Thomas taught a three-hour genealogy workshop on June 26, 2008, at Old Derby Academy, headquarters for the Hingham Historical Society. One of her students asked the question of how she got started in genealogy.

“When I was twenty years old I started to communicate with my great
grandmother Nora about our family history. …I was so excited! I spent
seven years of my life knowing my great grandmother Nora. She would
teach me about our family’s Lebanese culture and customs, to cook
traditional foods, and also to speak Arabic. I had the best time ever
with Sitoo Nora. I had learned so much about who I am! My close
relationship with Nora became in essence the true motivation for me
to continue forward to pursue the extent of my family history. One
should be proud of their ancestry. I am!”

Valerie graduated in the top fourth of the Class of 1978 from Hingham High School. She received her B.A. degree in American Studies, The B.A. Award for Distinction in American Studies, and a Minor degree in Anthropology from Pine Manor College in 1982. Valerie graduated from Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science with her M.L.S. in Library Science/Archival Management in 1986. Her expertise focuses on special interests including Archaeology, Photographic Archives, Cataloging and Classification of Books and Audiovisual Materials, Genealogy, and Oral History.

For over 30 years Valerie has documented the genealogy of The Thomas Family History (The Tannous Family) back seven generations and further to Jezzin, Lebanon; the history of Sahara Bakery; and also, the Quincy Syrian Bakery. Her publications include: Quincy Syrian Bakery: Four Generations of Bakers in The Thomas Family (1987), and A Proposal for the Preservation of the Thomas Family Collection: The Quincy Syrian Bakery (1992).

Her article “Do You Own Family Photos?” which was published in Packard’s Progress (Torrance, CA) in 1987, prompted major interest to genealogists in the field to provide appropriate yet adequate means of preserving family histories. By documenting oral history interviews with family members and relatives, and also, preserving photographs and memorabilia, the longevity of one’s family history becomes priceless
and available for future generations. Without the proper means of preservation, photographs will deteriorate at a faster rate and will
be lost forever.
