The Dechoker Story

According to the National Safety Council, choking is the fourth leading cause of accidental death in the world, affecting children and the elderly most of all. Choking can so often be fatal, but death can also be preventable in many cases.

Standard first aid treatments for choking can be difficult to perform in an emergency. Abdominal thrusting and — in more extreme cases — tracheotomy procedures come with their own risks and dangers. In 2009, Dechoker inventor Alan Carver decided there had to be a better option.

His innovative solution was a simple, easy-to-use device that could treat choking immediately on anyone age 1 and older. Just as the widespread access to defibrillators has changed the survival rates in emergency heart health situations, we believe having a Dechoker available in every home, school, restaurant and emergency vehicle could change the choking standard of care.

How It Works

The FDA-registered Dechoker is innovative and powerful, but it is also incredibly simple and easy to use. Made of a tongue depressor, face mask and suction plunger, it is designed to suck out the food or object from the airway of a choking victim.

The Dechoker can be used on anyone age 1 and older, available in three different sizes for toddlers, children and adults. It’s so simple, in fact, that choking victims can even use it on themselves if they are alone.

To use the Dechoker, simply tilt the choking victim’s head back and gently insert the tongue depressor into the mouth, on top of the tongue. Press the face mask against the face to create a seal over the mouth and nose, then pull back on the plunger. This creates suction to dislodge the food or object that is trapped in the airway and pull it outward into the Dechoker tongue depressor or the mouth, letting the victim breathe freely.

Many people are at increased risk of choking due to health conditions that make swallowing difficult and other concerns. The Dechoker can be used on any person regardless of such disorders.
