Acupuncture is the ultimate remedy for stress and anxiety because it downregulates the stress response.

When you are stressed, your body goes into sympathetic nervous system overdrive.

This is your “fight, flight or freeze” response, and it is a basic survival mechanism that affects the way that your body operates.

In this mode of operation, your body increases:
→ vigilance (so you stay more wakeful and watchful)
→ inflammatory chemicals (in case of injury)
→ blood sugar (to fuel your muscles for running or fighting)
→ muscle tension (to be ready for action)

It also reduces blood flow to your digestive and reproductive organs (not important if you are fighting for your life), and alters hormone balance to favor your ability to handle physical threats and reduce energy expended on non-essential physiological tasks.

Your brain doesn’t differentiate between mental stress and the stress of physical danger, so even a stressful day at work can trigger all of these changes in your body.

Acupuncture is an amazing healing modality because it downregulates this sympathetic nervous system activity and upregulates parasympathetic nervous system activity.

In other words, acupuncture promotes the “rest, digest, and heal” nervous system mode of operation. That’s how it has such a beautiful ability to:

→ calm the mind
→ benefit digestion
→ promote hormone balance
→ lower inflammation
→ regulate blood sugar
→ relax muscle tension
→ improve sleep

If you are frazzled, stressed, anxious, and not sleeping, acupuncture is a fantastic choice to get you feeling grounded and like yourself again. We are here to help!

Aren't these herbs gorgeous?

When my friend broke his big toe badly this summer and half of his foot was black and blue from bruising, I knew that this was the formula I wanted to send him.

It's a blend of potent herbs that reduce inflammation, support blood flow, and stimulate tissue healing.

Something special about this formula is that it contains three plant resins, two of which you have heard of: frankincense and myrrh! The other one is known as "dragon's blood" because of its beautiful red hue (check out the 2nd & 3rd photos to see this herb on its own).

The resins lose some potency if cooked, so this formula is best ground up into a powder and taken raw. My herbal pharmacy is primarily composed of tinctures, so it was really fun to get these bulk herbs and grind them up! ❤

Did you know that acupuncture can get muscles firing again that have become inhibited due to injury or other dysfunction?

I received this lovely note in my email inbox last week. My patient is a 63-year-old female with a chief complaint of pain and weakness in her arm. After limited success strengthening her shoulder with physical therapy, she came to me for support.

Orthopedic testing revealed that the rotator cuff muscle responsible for raising her arm (the supraspinatus) had almost zero strength. After a targeted acupuncture treatment to that muscle, we re-tested the muscle, and there was a night and day difference. My patient was very surprised!

This wasn't a case of muscle atrophy and weakness—it was a case of muscle inhibition. Prior to treatment, the muscle simply wasn't able to contract well. Once we rehabbed its ability to fire on command, it became responsive again and she had the experience of her shoulder "coming back online." It was an exciting moment, and the effects lasted!

Best of all, this essential rotator cuff muscle will now support her ability to lift her arm up and she is a huge step closer to resolving her shoulder dysfunction and arm pain.

Her progress will also be accelerated with her PT appointments, because the muscle will be able to participate in the movements and will, therefore, have the ability to gain strength. (How can a muscle gain strength if it is offline and unable to contract?)

Do you think your shoulder might be offline too? I'm here to help!

Grateful to Jenny Nieters and her support staff Vincent and Therese for a fantastic hip flexors workshop last weekend! I learned so much and I’m always excited to add a few new skills to my repertoire to help my patients.

It was also such a treat to be in Berkeley and catch up with acupuncture friends! Thanks to Erin and Tina for making the trip even better! ❤️

Thank goodness for the cloud cover and rain showers today. After a few 100-degree days in a row in Denver, we are ready for a reprieve!

If you usually reach for iced beverages, ice cream, and cold smoothies on hot summer days, you might be surprised to learn that these items are considered problematic in Chinese Medicine. They can damage our digestive function and weaken our bodies over time.

While ice water may confer great health benefits as a cold plunge, it does not give us the same boost when we swallow it internally. Quite the opposite!

So ditch the iced drinks and chilled foods, and instead cool down using the herbs, spices, and foods that traditional cultures have used for millennia. Mint, cucumber, and spicy foods are a few tasty examples. I’d love to hear if you have other favorites 😊

Fond memories from the Acupuncture Association of Colorado’s spring conference in April!

We gathered for a day of lecture and practice led by .sports.acupuncturist all about activating the core muscles and treating lumbo-pelvic dysfunction. It was a fantastic class with lots of great takeaways.

Aside from the class, it was a pleasure to meet some new colleagues, and an unexpected result of the day was that I ended up joining the AAC Board of Directors as the new Secretary! I’m looking forward to being a part of this organization over the next few years and supporting the practice of acupuncture in Colorado. :)
