Digging up more photos from the archives! - We’ve been helping K-12 students in Illinois schools for 35 years as part of our Seeing is Believing in-school outreach program. In fact, we’ve helped our 11,000.

Through this program, we have provided low vision aids and education to the student, parents and teachers. That’s 35 years of empowering low vision students and classrooms to keep learning and we’re still chugging along in 2026.

For January, we’re sharing old photos to reflect on where this journey has taken us. We’ve been doing this for a long time and a point we are certain of is that a trusted advocate to share your low vision journey is one of the best tools you can have in your toolbox.

This woman is beaming as her husband finally finds the help he’s been searching for. Having someone cheer you on and share in your wins is such a powerful way to keep momentum while you navigate low vision. We welcome your coach to join in on your journey and if you need a coach, we can be the ones to root you on.

Honoring how it started-

Dr. Eleanor Faye (1923-2020)

Long before Spectrios Institute for Low Vision opened its doors and recruited Dr. Williams to lead with a “head, heart, eyes” approach, a legendary woman named Eleanor Eaton Faye was doing groundbreaking work in the new field of low vision.

Eleanor Faye received her medical degree from Standford university School of Medicine in 1950. She was the first woman resident at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. Following that she worked at the Lighthouse Guild in New York until 91- an affiliation lasting 60 years. During that time, she founded and led the Lighthouse Guild Continuing Education Program in Low Vision Care, lecturing at universities, hospitals and agencies.

Now considered a pioneer in the field, she focused on using the vision the person has, however little it is, as best possible. This was a novel approach at the time and still is a widely underused framework for low vision treatment.

It is under the mentorship of Eleanor Faye that our own Dr. Williams cut his teeth in the low vision field, adopting her approach of using what vision a person has to the best of their ability.

It is that special approach that carries on today at Spectrios and makes us such a unique place. At Spectrios, low vision is not the end of the road but just the beginning.

Dr. Eleanor Faye was committed to helping people with low vision lead full and productive lives and today we honor her legacy by carrying the torch.

This year, we received a wonderful gift from Precision Vision. We received a variety of low-vision support tools that we will use in our Seeing is Believing in-school outreach program. With the help of supporters like Precision Vision and people just like you, we are able to impact the lives of people with low vision from helping school aged kids get the most out of their education and participate in classroom activities to helping adults manage degenerative eye disorders while maintaining independence.

Today is the last day to make a tax-deductible donation for 2025, if you haven’t made yours yet don’t wait until midnight! Donate now and help us make an impact on low vision that you can really see.

For Lydia’s birthday, Dr Williams gave her a telescope that helps her see in the distance. Check her out explaining how it works!

Dwight was a painter who relied on his vision to create- a prominent tool in the box of any artist. So, when his vision began to decline, he knew he needed help. On recommendation from the Wheaton Eye Clinic and having dealt with his father’s own macular degeneration, he knew to turn to Spectrios Institute for Low Vision.

Dwight first received a comprehensive low-vision rehabilitation exam from a specialty-trained doctor at Spectrios. From there, the entire Spectrios team quickly stepped in with the essential education and practical tools to support his daily life and independence. Dwight began to see a future with vision loss that didn’t mean giving up the activities he loves.

Chris, a member of our Access Technology Department who lives with vision challenges, worked closely with Dwight to explore magnifiers, computer accessibility features, and helpful apps. Together, they explored possibilities Dwight never knew existed—tools that now help him maintain his independence and confidence.

When Dwight arrived to his follow-up appointment, he carried something special under his arm. Deeply moved by the compassion and expertise he received at Spectrios, Dwight had created a new work of art to show his gratitude. Using the tools he found with the help of Chris and the Access Technology Department; he painted a brightly burning candle. The glowing flame representing the light of hope for people with low vision who come to Spectrios.

We see people who have received life changing diagnoses, many of whom have no idea what is possible with the right treatment plan. The Spectrios care team is filled with experts that help these individuals adapt and maintain independence, including staff members who live with low vision themselves.

Spectrios makes its home in the Deicke house, affectionately referred to as the “little house of hope.” When people with low vision find their way to our home it is often with anxiety, fear and low expectations. What they find when they get here is a dedicated team offering rehabilitative strategies, adaptive technologies and most importantly, hope.

We offer hope, backed by science, to every person who walks through our doors. We believe there are no lost causes—only potential in people with vision loss. Having served more than 25,000 individuals, we help people navigate vision loss while continuing to live with purpose. Dwight’s candle is a powerful reminder that hope continues to burn for individuals facing vision loss. With support, education, and adaptive tools, their light does not fade, it shines.

Help us keep the flame lit. https://secure.givelively.org/donate/spectrios-institute-for-low-vision
