Today community members, providers, and staff came together to plant the first iteration of our own little herb garden. We got our hands dirty learning a hügelkultur planting style, layering aged alder logs, wood chips, compost and worm castings to create a nutrient rich foundation where our herbs can thrive. Everyone pitched in; we sipped tea under the sun, and together we created something beautiful.
This is just the beginning! We'll gather in the spring to add more nectar-rich, pollinator-loving plants, and annuals. If you happen to spot a lemon balm and mint plant, don't worry! They're just overwintering for now before moving into their own containers.
Stay tuned as we work to create a simple system for people to harvest, share, and divide the herbs as the garden grows.
A huge THANK YOU to Nehalem Bay Garden Club, Nehalem Bay Health District, and our friends at Alder Creek Farm for making this project possible.
