𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀
With all the choices you make for your sauna, the rocks that top your heater might seem like a minor detail. But selecting the right rocks for your sauna is crucial to ensure optimal heat and an enjoyable experience. Sauna rocks are placed on the stove to absorb and radiate heat, and their quality significantly impact the performance of your sauna.
With that in mind, here are a few steps to follow when selecting sauna stones:
𝟭. 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀: The most common & recommended rocks for saunas are volcanic stones, such as 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙚 or 𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙚. These rocks are durable, can withstand high temperatures, and retain heat efficiently. Avoid soft or porous stones, as they can crack or break under intense heat.
𝟮. 𝗠𝗶𝘅 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀: Select rocks of varying sizes, as a mix helps distribute heat more evenly. Larger rocks work well for the base, while smaller stones can fill in some of the gaps. It’s still important to have small gaps between rocks to ensure sufficient airflow. This will prolong your heater’s lifespan and help ensure smooth, consistent performance.
𝟯. 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: Make sure the rocks are free of chemicals or contaminants that could release harmful gases when heated. Most reputable sauna heater manufacturers sell high-quality stones separately. See our full selection by searching for “stones” on our website!
𝟰. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆: A typical sauna requires about 50-100 pounds of rocks, depending on the size of the stove and the sauna itself. Check your heater’s manual for the recommended amount.
𝟱. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲: In a home sauna, you can expect sauna rocks to last two to five years, depending on frequency of use. Inspect regularly to catch damage before it impacts your sauna’s performance. If you notice rocks cracking or developing contamination such as mold, it’s important to replace them.
With the right stones, your sauna will radiate heat effectively, creating the perfect environment for your rejuvenation.
