We are grateful for the Patrick family of Wheeling, who recently shared the impact Easterseals has had on their family in a heartwarming letter sent as their 18-year-old son wraps up 15 years of life-changing services. 🧡🙏👍

The Patrick family of Wheeling first brought their son, Aidan, to Easterseals 15 years ago when he was 3. As Aidan turned 18 on Feb. 28, mom Patty reflects on the impact Easterseals had not just on Aidan but on the whole family.

March is a BIG month: Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Brian Injury Awareness Month, and Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, along with Women's History Month. That's a lot of awareness! All are worthy, and we celebrate all of them here at Easterseals. 🧡🤩🌟🎉

One of the most important things of which parents can be aware -- and one that can make a huge difference -- is whether your child is reaching developmental milestones. The earlier parents recognize delays and a course of action is established, the better the outcomes for kiddos. Visit our website for a milestone checklist by age.

And if you are interested in helping your local Easterseals, please consider setting up a monthly or one-time donation through the Donate button on our website.

Children develop skills and reach milestones at their own pace. These guidelines offer general expectations for progress during these stages.

Easterseals is truly blessed with a fantastic Board of Directors. This profile of our Board finance chair Robert Cupp of WesBanco appeared on the front page of the Finance section of this year's Progress edition of The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register and The Times Leader on Monday, Feb. 23. Bob has a heart the size of Texas, which, paired with his financial acumen, makes him a trusted and valuable member of our community. Thanks for your service, Bob!

This is one of the lessons we teach when we go into schools. Never touch a person’s assistive mobility device without being asked to/given permission by the person. Thank you, Diverse Abilities, for reminding us! 🧡

Mobility devices, whether it is a wheelchair, scooter, walker, white cane, support cane, crutches, or a guide dog, are not “just equipment.” They represent freedom. They allow us to move through the world independently, simply navigating life differently than those who do not need mobility support.

These devices give us independence. They give us autonomy. They are an extension of who we are.

That is why respect matters. Please do not touch, grab, lean on, or move a mobility device without permission. Even unintentional damage can put our safety and independence at risk. Most mobility devices are customized to the individual using them, and repairs or replacements are rarely quick or simple.

A small moment of awareness and respect can make a lasting difference.

“Having a disability does not change who we are. It changes our interactions with the world.” Gina Martin

Inclusion happens when we stop asking people to “fit in” annd start learning how each of us moves through life in our own way.

Rehabilitative Medical Care & Pediatric Therapy for the Ohio Valley

Founded in Wheeling, WV, in 1937, the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center is one of 68 affiliates of the national Easterseals organization. We serve the Wheeling, Parkersburg, St. Clairsville, and Steubenville areas of the Ohio Valley.

Our therapists and medical team treat more than 2,700 children and adults annually for physical, developmental, and emotional challenges. Clients come to us with a wide spectrum of needs, from minor developmental delays to profound conditions such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida. In 2019, we introduced Applied Behavior Analysis for the treatment of autism.

Easterseals is proud to be the only local provider that is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. We provide the following services:

1. Rehabilitative Medical Care – with two board-certified physicians specializing in both pediatrics and physiatry (Dr. Ellen Kitts and Dr. Jason Edinger of UPMC)
