Another great tip from Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)

Another winter tip from Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)

Cold weather can trigger eczema symptoms. Tips on how to manage eczema:

- Use over-the-counter (OTC) moisturizers and skin barriers often.
- Use prescribed medicines to reduce inflammation. Mild eczema may be managed by OTC products like low-strength hydrocortisone.
- Use the “wet wrapping” or “soak and seal” methods at nighttime to help lock in moisture.
- Cover your skin to protect it from the cold. Wear 100% cotton gloves as a base layer under your winter gloves.
- Use a humidifier in your home to help prevent dryness. (Moisture levels should stay between 30-50%.)
- Reduce exposure to other known eczema triggers as the skin may be more sensitive.
- Use mild soaps for handwashing – hand sanitizer can worsen hand eczema.

The Ohio Valley is no stranger to Floods and all the hazards that come with them. Take a look at this reminder from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) for some safe tips after flood cleanup.

Flood waters can leave behind mold, chemicals, bacteria, and viruses. These can create long-term health issues for people with asthma and allergies. Mold is one of the biggest concerns as it grows in damp environments and in places you may not expect. Exposure to mold can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.

Use these tips to prevent long-term symptoms from mold after a flood:

- Wear an N95 mask to protect yourself
- Clean washable items in a washing machine with detergent and hot water
- Clean hard surfaces with soap and water
- Throw out furniture and other items that cannot be cleaned or disinfected right away
- Create ventilation in your home by opening windows and using air cleaners
