šŸ’› It’s World Autism Awareness Day again … and I have to say it:

Awareness is NOT enough.

It never was.

We’ve spent years building awareness—and yes, that matters.
But families are still fighting for services.
Autistic individuals are still being misunderstood.
Too many systems still aren’t built with inclusion in mind.
And no one wants to fund the supports that are needed.

So today, I’m choosing more:

✨ Acceptance
šŸ“£ Advocacy
šŸ”„ Action

That looks like:
šŸ‘‚ Listening to autistic voices
🧠 Challenging outdated thinking and policies
šŸ¤ Showing up—consistently—not just today, and not just in April

If we truly care, we don’t stop at awareness.
We do something about it.

Let’s be better. Let’s do better.

✨ World Autism Acceptance Month. It's here. ✨

I wrote this five years ago.

20 years post-diagnosis.
20 years after my arrest.
After sitting in moments that cracked open everything I thought I understood about support, control, and what it really means to be a ā€œhelper.ā€

And the truth?

This still hurts to say out loud, but here it goes:

ā€œ...if his autistic voice matters and he gets to choose his path, he gets to choose his shirt.ā€

Because here’s the part we don’t like to admit:

We say autistic voices matter…
until they say something we wouldn’t choose.

Until it’s inconvenient.
Until it’s uncomfortable.
Until it doesn’t fit our idea of what’s ā€œright.ā€

And then?

We redirect.
We reframe.
We override.

We call it support.
We call it guidance.
We call it care.

But sometimes… it’s control.

And if we’re honest, that line is thinner than we want it to be.

This isn’t a feel-good post.
This is about the work we still need to do, friends.

šŸ‘‰ Do we actually believe in autonomy?
šŸ‘‰ Or do we believe in autonomy… with conditions?

Because if his voice matters—really matters—
then it has to matter when we don’t agree.

If he gets to choose his path,
he gets to choose his shirt.

Even when it’s hard for us.
Even when we don't like the color.
Or the symbol.
Or whatever.
Let him choose his damn shirt.

Here's the post.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be speaking at the Autism Caring Center Connecting Conference for Momsā„¢ in May! šŸ’™

My session is called "The Roadmap Beyond Early Intervention: Next Steps for Families—Navigating Autism Services (Including IBHS in PA) with Clarity and Confidence."

When a child turns three, families often find themselves standing at the edge of a major transition—leaving the Early Intervention system and entering a whole new world that can feel confusing, overwhelming, and difficult to navigate. In this heartfelt and practical session, I blend professional expertise with lived experience as a mother of a neurodivergent son to walk parents and caregivers through what comes next. From understanding ABA and outpatient therapies to accessing school-based supports, behavioral health services (including IBHS in Pennsylvania), and long-term transition planning, this talk offers a clear and empowering roadmap for families. Above all, I remind caregivers that they are not alone—and that support, hope, and partnership are still very much ahead and within reach.

This inspiring weekend brings moms together to relax, learn and connect. I can’t wait to be part of it.

(I'll also be hosting a table for Achieving True Self, Inc., an annual and very proud sponsor!)

Join me May 1st - 2nd at the Hilton Garden Inn in Canonsburg.
Register TODAY, because tickets sell FAST.

Today is National Bipolar Day. šŸ’š

For me, this isn’t just another awareness day on the calendar. Bipolar disorder is part of my family story.

It’s deeply personal, and it’s something I have seen impact people I love with my whole heart in ways that many others may never fully understand.

Too often, bipolar disorder is reduced to stereotypes, jokes, or labels. But behind every diagnosis is a human being — someone trying to navigate emotions, relationships, work, family, and life while carrying something incredibly heavy, at times crippling.

People living with bipolar disorder are not ā€œtoo much.ā€ They are not broken. They are not their diagnosis.

They are loved.
They are worthy.
They are resilient.

And they deserve compassion, support, understanding, and access to care—without shame.

Tonight, I’m thinking about every family who has walked through this. Every caregiver. Every family member. Every person fighting battles that others cannot see.

Please be gentle with people. Love on humanity.

You never know what someone is carrying. šŸ’š

The spring season, to me, always feels like an invitation to slow down, take a deep breath, and remember what matters the most. 🌸

Spring reminds us that even after the longest winters, new life still finds its way through. Flowers bloom. The sun returns, shining brightly. Our hearts soften. Hope rises again. It’s a time of renewal and rebirth. 🌼

As we move toward Easter, I’m reminded that the world does not need more anger, division, hatred, or noise. šŸ«¶šŸ»

It needs more kindness.

More grace.

More compassion.

More people willing to love louder, help more, forgive faster, and show up for one another.

We may not be able to change the whole world overnight, but we can change someone’s world by how we treat them.

A smile.

A prayer.

A helping hand.

A reminder that they are seen, have value, and are never alone.

The world needs Jesus more than ever — and maybe one of the greatest ways we can reflect Him is by making this world a little softer, brighter, and better for everyone around us.

We can be better. We can do better for our world. šŸŒŽ

Help people. Don’t hurt them.

Will you join me?

There are moments that truly shake you.

Yesterday was one of them.

What unfolded in my local grocery store wasn’t just ā€œan incident.ā€ It was a human being in distress. It was fear. It was chaos. It was pain spilling out in a way that impacted everyone around her — including children, families, even a dog — and those who were hurt.

And yes — that impact matters. Deeply.

But what’s sitting heavy on my heart this morning isn’t just what happened.

It’s how we responded.

Phones out. Cameras rolling. People watching.

Not asking, ā€œHow can I help?ā€
Not pausing to consider, ā€œWhat is this person going through?ā€

Just… recording.

Let me be clear — there is no excuse for harm. The people affected deserve care, support, and safety. The children who witnessed this deserve gentleness and reassurance.

But two things can be true at once:

Someone can cause harm…
and still be in desperate need of help.

Whether this was mental illness, substance use, or something we may never fully understand — this was not entertainment.

This was not content for likes.

This was a moment that called for humanity.

And somewhere along the way, we have become so desensitized that we reach for our phones faster than we reach for our compassion.

We can do better.

We MUST do better.

We need more awareness.
More education.
More accessible support for mental health and substance use.
More conversations that remove stigma instead of fueling it.

And in moments like this?

We need to remember that the person at the center of the storm… is still a person.

To the people impacted or even physically hurt — I am so deeply sorry.
To the children who were scared — you deserved to feel safe.
To the woman at the center of it all — I hope you find the help you so clearly need.

And to all of us?

Let’s take a long, honest look at how we show up in moments that test our humanity.

Because the measure of who we are…
isn’t in the easy moments.

It’s in these ones, right here.

Some moments just stay with you. šŸ’›

Yesterday was one of them.

Standing alongside my fellow colleagues who are truly passionate humans, watching Shayna pour her whole heart into her words—literally moved to tears—was a powerful reminder of why spaces like The Center for Learning and Belonging, a member of the Achieving True Self, Inc. family, matter so deeply.

This wasn’t just a ribbon cutting. This was a reflection of what happens when purpose, advocacy, and community come together to say: every child belongs.

I’m so grateful to be part of work—and a community—that leads with their whole heart to include EVERYONE. šŸ’«ā˜•

Today, I want to share a memory — a moment frozen in time, a lesson learned.

I recalled this memory upon viewing posts on different platforms related to encouraging eye contact.

I remembered a day that my son said to me as a young teen, ā€œI can listen or look. I can’t do both.ā€

Gut punch.

Breath caught in throat.

How many times was I guilty of asking him to look at me when speaking with him as a child? ā€œLook at me. In the eyes, buddy! Hey, over here! Can you look at me?ā€

Well, admittedly quite a bit.

But when we know better, we can do better. I’m glad I learned a powerful lesson from my own son, a true self-advocate.

Eye contact can be difficult for persons on the spectrum, persons with anxiety, persons with sensory dysfunction. Eyes may be the window to the soul, and eye contact may be considered in many cultures a sign of respect, but we CANNOT force someone to do something that feels aversive, unnatural, or downright painful.

Compassion over compliance.

Just because someone isn’t looking right at you doesn’t mean they aren’t paying attention. We have to understand this, and we have to accept it.

ā€œI can listen or look. I can’t do both.ā€

Listen to autistic voices.

šŸ’™ Collaboration in Action šŸ’™

Last week, we had the opportunity to connect at the Special Needs Consortium (SNC), hosted by Provident Charter School West in Baden — a school dedicated to helping children with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences reach their full potential through multisensory instruction and individualized learning.

SNC brings together organizations committed to increasing awareness, access, and advocacy for individuals with special needs and their families — creating a powerful network of support across the Greater Pittsburgh community.

We were honored to represent Achieving True Self and SpectroDolce alongside so many incredible partners, including Variety - the Children's Charity of Pittsburgh, whose mission to empower children with disabilities truly changes lives. Through Variety, families we serve have received life-changing equipment like iPads, adaptive bikes, and strollers — opening doors to greater independence, confidence, and inclusion. šŸ’«

Closing out tonight with a full heart and a grateful spirit while I prepare for Monday morning. ā˜•ļøšŸ’›

This past week reminded me — in big and small ways — why I do this work.

From the continued sharing and connection around World Behavioral Analysis Day…
to the conversations, collaborations, and community that keep unfolding…

I’m reminded that impact doesn’t always shout.

Sometimes it just sneaks up — in a message, a share, a conversation, a connection.

And it builds. šŸ¤Ž

And it keeps on building. šŸ’›

This week ahead is full —
✨ hosting and connecting through an incredible Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce event with my Achieving True Self, Inc. team on Wednesday, and a Saturday morning with the Autism Caring Center and SOMEBUNNY special

✨ gathering again with the of white oak

✨ exploring new partnerships and possibilities through The Caffeinated Advocate (a big one may be on the horizon)

And through it all, I’m holding onto this simple fact:

There are a lot of good ones out there. People who care. People who show up. People who pour into others.

I’m grateful to walk alongside so many of you. šŸ«¶šŸ»

Here’s to another week of connection, collaboration, and purpose-driven work.
Let’s keep showing up — together. ā˜•ļøšŸŒ»
