Something happened in our community…and everyone had a reaction. But here’s the question no one is asking:

👉 What would YOU have done in that moment?

When someone is in crisis—
in a grocery store, a parking lot, right in front of you—
do you know how to respond?

Or do we react out of fear… confusion… or assumptions?

💛 This Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m inviting our community into a real, honest conversation: “We Can Do Better: A Community Conversation on How to Support People in Crisis”

This is not a lecture.
This is not just for professionals.
This is for EVERYONE.

Crisis doesn’t wait for the “right” person to show up.

I’m bringing more than 25 years of expertise to what I share…
but more importantly, I’m bringing you into my life.

As a lifelong caregiver, I was introduced early to the realities of mental health and substance use.

As a mother of a son with autism, I’ve lived the moments most people only witness.
As a professional, I’ve worked inside systems that help and sometimes fail.
And twenty five years ago, in a moment of crisis…I asked for help.

Instead ...
🚨 I was arrested.

That moment didn’t just change my life.
It changed how I view and respond to a crisis interaction.

Sometimes, what looks like “behavior”… is actually fear, overwhelm, or a desperate attempt to communicate.

We’ll talk about:
✨ What’s really happening in moments of crisis
✨ How autism, mental health, trauma, and substance abuse can show up in public
✨ What helps, and what makes things worse
✨ What YOU can do in the moment, even as a bystander

Because sometimes, the difference between trauma and safety…
is one person who chose compassion.

Come be part of the conversation.
Come be part of change.
Join me May 19th at 6pm at Mission: Agape.

ALL ARE WELCOME. Free to all. Just bring an open mind and heart.

✨ Care With Purpose: A moment to reconnect with your “why.” ✨

Yesterday, I had the absolute honor of spending the morning with the incredible professionals of Life Options Pittsburgh's North Group—and I’m still feeling the impact.

As someone who has been a caregiver both personally and professionally throughout my life, this work is deeply personal to me. And yesterday was a powerful reminder of just how much heart exists in this field.

We paused.
We reflected.
We remembered.

People shared stories.
People got emotional.
People reconnected with the exact moment they knew…
“This is why I do what I do.”

And in a field where so much is asked of you every single day—that moment matters.

Caregiving is powerful.
It’s human.
And ... it doesn’t clock out.

Life Options Pittsburgh is truly something special—a network rooted in serving, educating, and connecting those who support seniors and their families through some of life’s most complex and vulnerable moments. Being in a room full of individuals so deeply committed to others was incredibly moving.

I’m especially grateful to be part of a network like this, where families are supported through a wide range of resources—and where my work as TCA and at Achieving True Self can add another meaningful layer of support for caregivers and the individuals they serve.

A heartfelt thank you to Apryl Garrett, who stepped in for Nicole Garritano and led such a warm, welcoming, and meaningful morning for all of us. You set the tone beautifully!

I left inspired, grateful, and even more certain of this than ever:

💛 The work you do matters more than you will ever fully see.

Excited and honored to continue this journey with the East and South groups next!

The worst day of my life became the reason I found my calling.

25 years ago today, my life changed forever.

I was arrested.

My son was taken from me.

And in a single moment, everything I thought I knew about myself, my future, and my worth… was gone.

There are dates that pass…
and there are dates that mark you forever.

April 19th is mine.

I remember the fear and the shame.
The feel of cold metal handcuffs against my wrists.
The sound of a slammed iron door.
The other women in the holding cell who cackled, "what are YOU here for, honey?"
The ache of being separated from the one person who mattered most to me.

But here’s the truth I’ve come to understand over 25 years:

That time period burned eternally in my memory revealed ... my calling.

Everything I do today… every room I walk into, every story I share, every person I fight for… they trace back to that moment.

It’s why “Imprisoned No More” exists.
It’s why I use my voice through The Caffeinated Advocate.
It’s why I show up so fully in the work we do at Achieving True Self—because I know what it feels like to be at your lowest… and still have a life worth rebuilding.

What I do is not a career.
It is purpose in action.
It is redemption in motion.
This is what happens when pain becomes a pathway.

And through it all—there has always been one constant: my son.

He was—and still is—my why.
My anchor.
My reason.

Every step I’ve taken… every ounce of growth, every moment of courage, every decision to choose purpose over shame…leads me to NOW.

So today, I need to say this: clearly, completely, and from the deepest part in my heart ...

I'm grateful for what happened.

25 years later, I don’t just look back on this.

I stand firmly in why it happened for me, for my family, and those whom God allows me to serve.

I am, without a doubt, Imprisoned No More. 🖤

I am not the young woman who was shattered that day.
I am a strong leader who was born from the fire.

I’m so honored to be part of this incredible lineup at the Autism Caring Center's Autism Connecting Conference for Moms™—and even more excited to share in this special day with you all. 💛

My session is:
✨ “The Roadmap Beyond Early Intervention: Next Steps for Families”

Because here’s the raw truth, friends…

So many families get support early on—but then find themselves asking:
➡️ “What now?”
➡️ “What does the future actually look like for my child?”
➡️ “How do I make the right decisions from here?”

In my session, we’re going to walk through:
✔️ How to move from early intervention into a clear, confident next phase
✔️ What to consider as your child grows (school, services, independence, and beyond)
✔️ How to advocate with both strategy and your "autism mama" heart
✔️ And how to build a roadmap that fits your child—not someone else’s version of success

I’m coming to this event wearing a few hats:
💛 Founder/CIO of The Caffeinated Advocate
💛 Director of FSCE from Achieving True Self, Inc. (proud sponsor & vendor!)
💛 And most importantly… an autism mama who truly gets it and has walked this journey for 25 years

This conference is truly an experience you will treasure. It’s not just information—it’s connection, clarity, and real tools you’ll actually use as a parent or caregiver.

If you’re coming, please come find me—I would LOVE to meet you!

If this makes someone uncomfortable… good.

Sit with that. ☕🔥

Because autistic individuals have been sitting with society's discomfort, assumptions, and misunderstandings for far too long.

Let’s clear a few things up, shall we?

Autism is NOT a phase.
It is NOT a tantrum.
It is NOT “bad behavior.”
And no—discipline is NOT the answer.

What you’re seeing is:
👉 Sensory overload
👉 Communication differences
👉 A nervous system doing its best to cope

And when you dismiss that?
When you label it?
When you try to punish it away?

That’s not support. That’s serious harm. 💔

Autistic individuals are not here to make others comfortable.
They are not problems to be fixed.
They are human beings who deserve to be understood—without conditions.

So if the first instinct is judgment…
Pause. Learn. Then do better.

Because “(they’re) giving me a hard time” isn't true.

They are HAVING a hard time.

And they deserve more than misunderstanding. 💙

Let’s talk about the A-Team, RHD, part of Allegheny County Department of Human Services that has recently partnered with the White Oak Police Department in my hometown. 👇

There’s been a lot of conversation (and some confusion) around Allegheny County’s Alternative Response Team—and what it actually means for our communities.

In case you missed the article featured in Tube City Online, here it is: https://almanac.tubecityonline.com/almanac/?e=4078

So let’s ground ourselves in the facts:

🚨 This is NOT replacing police
🤝 This is SUPPORTING police
🧠 This is adding behavioral health experts to the response

The A-Team is designed to respond to non-violent mental health and human service-related 911 calls—sometimes instead of police, sometimes alongside them.

Why does that matter?

Because not every crisis needs a badge. There, I said it.
Sometimes it needs a clinician. A de-escalation specialist. A connection to services.

As someone who has trained first responders and worked closely in crisis situations, AND who has PERSONALLY experienced a devastating situation myself with a loved one, I can tell you:

➡️ The “right responder” changes everything
➡️ It can reduce trauma
➡️ It can prevent escalation
➡️ It can lead to better long-term outcomes

And for neurodivergent individuals—including those on the autism spectrum—this kind of response can be the difference between support and misunderstanding.

Also—real talk here, friends—there’s been quite a bit of misinformation floating around. And that’s understandable when something new is introduced.

But this is exactly the kind of moment where it’s worth pausing, learning, and asking questions based on curiosity before forming conclusions.

We can hold space for both of these truths:

✔️ Response time matters
✔️ AND response TYPE matters

This is not perfect.
This is not the final step on the path.
But it is absolutely a step in the right direction.

I'm so grateful for this. Thank you, Chief Binder and the WOPD for engaging in this critical collaboration. You have my full support.

This is my why.
My reason.
My absolute everything. 💙

This is me with my son, Christian (taken at an outing on Friday).

He’s 28.
He’s neurodivergent.
He’s extraordinary.

For years, our family has been supported, lifted, and carried by a village that believed in Christian—sometimes before the world fully saw him the way I always have.

And today… he’s giving that same gift back.

Christian works today as a paraprofessional in a local school district, working with individuals with autism, ID/D, and other disabilities—walking alongside them with patience, compassion, and understanding that can only come from that lived experience.

For over six years, he’s been showing up for his community and developing a career grounded in service.
Showing care.
Showing what’s possible. ✨

At home, he’s also my partner in love and responsibility—helping care for Mama Betty and our six very spoiled felines 🐾 (because of course we have six, right?).

This is what World Autism Month means to me.

It’s not just awareness.
It’s legacy.
It’s community.
It’s watching your child grow into someone who is now part of the village for others.

Christian, I am endlessly proud of you. I love you so much.
Thank you for being exactly who you are—and for making this world better just by being in it and by being your true and authentic self.

💙

P.S. If you were wondering, he drinks coffee just like his mama. 😉☕

💛 It’s World Autism Awareness Day again … and I have to say it:

Awareness is NOT enough.

It never was.

We’ve spent years building awareness—and yes, that matters.
But families are still fighting for services.
Autistic individuals are still being misunderstood.
Too many systems still aren’t built with inclusion in mind.
And no one wants to fund the supports that are needed.

So today, I’m choosing more:

✨ Acceptance
📣 Advocacy
🔥 Action

That looks like:
👂 Listening to autistic voices
🧠 Challenging outdated thinking and policies
🤝 Showing up—consistently—not just today, and not just in April

If we truly care, we don’t stop at awareness.
We do something about it.

Let’s be better. Let’s do better.

Grab your coffee cup, and join me? 💛☕️🌻

✨ World Autism Acceptance Month. It's here. ✨

I wrote this five years ago.

20 years post-diagnosis.
20 years after my arrest.
After sitting in moments that cracked open everything I thought I understood about support, control, and what it really means to be a “helper.”

And the truth?

This still hurts to say out loud, but here it goes:

“...if his autistic voice matters and he gets to choose his path, he gets to choose his shirt.”

Because here’s the part we don’t like to admit:

We say autistic voices matter…
until they say something we wouldn’t choose.

Until it’s inconvenient.
Until it’s uncomfortable.
Until it doesn’t fit our idea of what’s “right.”

And then?

We redirect.
We reframe.
We override.

We call it support.
We call it guidance.
We call it care.

But sometimes… it’s control.

And if we’re honest, that line is thinner than we want it to be.

This isn’t a feel-good post.
This is about the work we still need to do, friends.

👉 Do we actually believe in autonomy?
👉 Or do we believe in autonomy… with conditions?

Because if his voice matters—really matters—
then it has to matter when we don’t agree.

If he gets to choose his path,
he gets to choose his shirt.

Even when it’s hard for us.
Even when we don't like the color.
Or the symbol.
Or whatever.
Let him choose his damn shirt.

Here's the post.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be speaking at the Autism Caring Center Connecting Conference for Moms™ in May! 💙

My session is called "The Roadmap Beyond Early Intervention: Next Steps for Families—Navigating Autism Services (Including IBHS in PA) with Clarity and Confidence."

When a child turns three, families often find themselves standing at the edge of a major transition—leaving the Early Intervention system and entering a whole new world that can feel confusing, overwhelming, and difficult to navigate. In this heartfelt and practical session, I blend professional expertise with lived experience as a mother of a neurodivergent son to walk parents and caregivers through what comes next. From understanding ABA and outpatient therapies to accessing school-based supports, behavioral health services (including IBHS in Pennsylvania), and long-term transition planning, this talk offers a clear and empowering roadmap for families. Above all, I remind caregivers that they are not alone—and that support, hope, and partnership are still very much ahead and within reach.

This inspiring weekend brings moms together to relax, learn and connect. I can’t wait to be part of it.

(I'll also be hosting a table for Achieving True Self, Inc., an annual and very proud sponsor!)

Join me May 1st - 2nd at the Hilton Garden Inn in Canonsburg.
Register TODAY, because tickets sell FAST.

Today is National Bipolar Day. 💚

For me, this isn’t just another awareness day on the calendar. Bipolar disorder is part of my family story.

It’s deeply personal, and it’s something I have seen impact people I love with my whole heart in ways that many others may never fully understand.

Too often, bipolar disorder is reduced to stereotypes, jokes, or labels. But behind every diagnosis is a human being — someone trying to navigate emotions, relationships, work, family, and life while carrying something incredibly heavy, at times crippling.

People living with bipolar disorder are not “too much.” They are not broken. They are not their diagnosis.

They are loved.
They are worthy.
They are resilient.

And they deserve compassion, support, understanding, and access to care—without shame.

Tonight, I’m thinking about every family who has walked through this. Every caregiver. Every family member. Every person fighting battles that others cannot see.

Please be gentle with people. Love on humanity.

You never know what someone is carrying. 💚

The spring season, to me, always feels like an invitation to slow down, take a deep breath, and remember what matters the most. 🌸

Spring reminds us that even after the longest winters, new life still finds its way through. Flowers bloom. The sun returns, shining brightly. Our hearts soften. Hope rises again. It’s a time of renewal and rebirth. 🌼

As we move toward Easter, I’m reminded that the world does not need more anger, division, hatred, or noise. 🫶🏻

It needs more kindness.

More grace.

More compassion.

More people willing to love louder, help more, forgive faster, and show up for one another.

We may not be able to change the whole world overnight, but we can change someone’s world by how we treat them.

A smile.

A prayer.

A helping hand.

A reminder that they are seen, have value, and are never alone.

The world needs Jesus more than ever — and maybe one of the greatest ways we can reflect Him is by making this world a little softer, brighter, and better for everyone around us.

We can be better. We can do better for our world. 🌎

Help people. Don’t hurt them.

Will you join me?

💛☕️🌻
