The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans include some positive steps, but they also leave out critical context around carbohydrates, food access, and mental health.
Without clear guidance that accounts for age, activity level, culture, medical history, and real-life constraints, these types of broad recommendations can easily be misunderstood.

When guidance is vague, people often fill in the gaps with restriction, extreme eating patterns, or renewed fear around carbohydrates and convenience foods. Over time, this can undermine both physical health and a peaceful relationship with food.

In this article, I explain where I feel the guidelines fall short, why personalized nutrition matters more than rigid rules, and how to approach national nutrition guidance with nuance and care.
