WSMR Fire Prevention & Engine 1 had a fantastic time visiting the students at White Sands School!!! We shared important fire safety tips, discussed creating family emergency plans, and reinforced this year’s Fire Prevention Week message; “Charge Into Fire Safety, Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Firefighter Diaz wowed the “Sun Chiefs” with an interactive PPE demonstration, and of course, Sparky the Fire Dog stole the show! The kids even got a hands-on look inside one of our fire trucks.

Thank you, White Sands School, for having us- we enjoyed connecting with the future leaders of our community! We hope to see you all again soon!

We had some great entries this year and you all made it exceptionally difficult to choose a winner. Thank you to all the WSMR community and those that participated. A huge congratulations to this year’s winner pictured with Sparky.

Please continue to practice fire safety and prevention year round and if you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to stop by one of your fire stations.

continued today with our Fire Prevention Section. They were out at the gate this morning giving out some swag and set up at the WSMR Commissary to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” .

Please take a minute to read the below Fire Prevention Safety Message. Keep an eye out for us the rest of the week.

Buy only listed products.
• When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, take time to research it. Look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging and product, which means that it meets important safety standards.
• Many products sold online and in stores may not meet safety standards and could increase the risk of fire.

After nearly 23 years of firefighting service Assistant Fire Chief Rick Saenz has decided to retire. Last week, WSMR FD along with Garrison Leadership, members from Fort Bliss Fire Department, Holloman AFB Fire Emergency Services, Kirtland AFB Fire & Emergency Services , Spaceport America Fire Department, friends and family gathered to celebrate the end of this chapter in his life.
Assistant Chief Saenz dedicated half of his life to the federal government. He started his firefighting career as a teenager with El Paso County ESD #2 as a volunteer firefighter with Montana Vista Fire Rescue. During that time, he enahnced his skills and started working as a Fire Suppression System Technician and obtained his NICET certification. In 2003 he was hired by WSMR Fire Department as a firefighter. His knowledge and experience allowed him to promote through the ranks. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2007, Captain in 2008, and finally AC of Operations in 2011. He closed out his career as the departments longest tenured Assistant Chief.
In his 23 year career in the federal fire service, AC Saenz responded to over 2600 emergencies to include incident commander of the 30-day long Abrams Fire. He's left an everlasting legacy, mentored countless firefighters, and made an impact to the departments he's served.
We wish you & your children the best of luck in your future endeavors.
WSMR FD and the WSMR community thank you for all your contributions and dedication you gave us all these years. You will be missed and leave big shoes to fill. Enjoy your retirement, "We got it from here Chief".
