30 cents of every dollar that patients pay for prescription drugs can be traced back to shady middlemen called pharmacy benefit managers. They are multi-billion-dollar corporations hired by insurance plans like Medicare, Medicaid, and private employer health care plans to keep their costs low, but not yours. They do that by raising out-of-pocket costs for patients and reimbursing pharmacies so little for the drugs that they often lose money on transactions. That practice is driving pharmacies out of business and robbing patients of their preferred local health care providers. Congress can stop these giant middlemen from destroying pharmacies and fleecing patients by passing S. 1909/H.R. 3554. .
