October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989. Since then, October has been a time to acknowledge domestic violence survivors and be a voice for its victims. Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death. The devastating consequences of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime.

When someone with power over an elderly person intentionally harms them or puts them at risk of harm, their actions — or lack of action — are considered elder abuse. Elder abuse isn’t just one action or inaction and it can take many forms. The 7 types of elder abuse are:

1️⃣ Neglect
2️⃣ Physical abuse
3️⃣ Sexual abuse
4️⃣ Abandonment
5️⃣ Emotional or psychological abuse
6️⃣ Financial abuse
7️⃣ Self-neglect

All types of elder abuse can lead to devastating consequences, including physical and/or emotional harm and even death. It is key for older people and their loved ones to know about all elder abuse types. They can use this knowledge to prevent abuse from happening or stop it before severe harm occurs.

If you are concerned that someone you care about is in an abusive relationship, the National Domestic Violence Hotline recommends the following approach:
📍Express your concerns to your loved one in a gentle and non-judgmental way.
📍Encourage participation in activities outside of the relationship with friends and family.
📍Encourage outreach to people who can provide help and guidance, such as the phone number for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 800-799-SAFE (7233).
📍Continue to show your support regardless of the decisions made by your loved one.

For more information and guidance on helping someone who is experiencing domestic violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline toll-free at 800-799-SAFE (7233).

💥 World Mental Health Day (10 Oct) is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters. 💥 It’s also a day to let people know that it’s okay to ask for help, no matter what you’re going through.

As people age, they may experience certain life changes that impact their mental health, such as coping with a serious illness or losing a loved one. Although many people will adjust to these life changes, some may experience feelings of grief, social isolation, or loneliness. When these feelings persist, they can lead to mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety.

Mental health is important at every stage of life. Effective treatment options are available to help older adults manage their mental health and improve their quality of life. Recognizing the signs and seeing a health care provider are the first steps to getting treatment. 🧠🗣️

What are symptoms of mental disorders in older adults?
• Noticeable changes in mood, energy level, or appetite
• Feeling flat or having trouble feeling positive emotions
• Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
• Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless, or on edge
• Increased worry or feeling stressed
• Anger, irritability, or aggressiveness
• Ongoing headaches, digestive issues, or pain
• Misuse of alcohol or drugs
• Sadness or hopelessness
• Thoughts of death or su***de or su***de attempts
• Engaging in high-risk activities
• Obsessive thinking or compulsive behavior
• Thoughts or behaviors that interfere with work, family, or social life
• Engaging in thinking or behavior that is concerning to others
• Seeing, hearing, and feeling things that other people do not see, hear, or feel

If you are unsure where to go for help, ask a health care provider or visit NIMH's Help for Mental Illnesses webpage. Communicating well with your health care provider can improve your care and help you come up with a treatment plan that works for you.

✍🏻5 Households items that could be making your family sick

Caregivers do everything they can to protect seniors from falling ill, but five overlooked everyday objects can have serious health effects. Use the following tips to minimize bacteria, viruses and allergens in your home and keep you and your loved ones happy and healthy.

🧽 Sponges
These items are meant to help us clean, but in reality, sponges are among the dirtiest objects in the home. Wet sponges are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. When you wash dishes or wipe down the kitchen counter with a sponge, E. coli and salmonella are spread all over these surfaces, which can result in food-borne illnesses.
To keep your kitchen sponge from becoming bacteria-laden, get in the habit of squeezing water out of it between uses and sanitizing it regularly. Replacing sponges regularly is crucial. A good rule of thumb is to toss your sponge out if it has any odor.

🧹Vacuums
Vacuuming is touted as an effective way to reduce the level of airborne allergens in the home. However, dust mites, pollen, pet dander and other allergens are not effectively contained in an average vacuum filter. These irritants are thrown back into the air and can continue to cause discomfort for you and your family. To avoid this, look for a vacuum that has a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) or S-class filter. These extra-fine filters can trap up to 99.9% of super fine particles, effectively reducing the pollutants in your home.

🛌 Pillows
Do you know what is resting on your pillow besides your head? Dust mites: the most common cause of non-seasonal allergies and asthma. Dust mites feed on flakes of human skin, which can accumulate deep within your pillows. To reduce the buildup of dust and dust mites and lessen their effects, wash pillowcases at least every three weeks, use zippered, allergen-proof covers underneath the cases, and wash the actual pillows every few months. Most pillows only have a lifespan of about one or two years, so be sure to replace them once they get soiled. Don't forget the throw pillows in your living areas as well.

🚪Doork***s
Bacteria and viruses can survive on doork***s and other hard surfaces for hours. To minimize exposure, clean k***s regularly. Good hand-washing habits are crucial for preventing the spread of germs as well.

📺 TV Remotes
Everyone in the house probably handles the living room television remote. It’s been coughed and sneezed on, dropped on the floor and had food spilled on it, but it probably isn’t a part of your regular cleaning routine. A weekly wipe down with a cloth or cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol will make it a bit more sanitary.

It is impossible to keep your home completely free of allergens, bacteria and viruses, but a few simple changes around the house can make a significant difference.

National Physician Assistant Week is celebrated every year from October 6-12. Treating patients in today’s complex healthcare settings takes a whole team of professionals. Among these medical workers are physician assistants, broadly trained in a wide spectrum of conditions and tasks. Their education focuses on patient education, preventive care, and chronic care management. They can help patients improve their quality of life and manage chronic conditions.

Physician Assistants typically do the following to expand the medical workforce and enhance quality of care.
• Take or review patients’ medical histories
• Examine patients
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as x rays or blood tests
• Diagnose a patient’s injury or illness
• Give treatment, such as setting broken bones and immunizing patients
• Educate and counsel patients and their families
• Prescribe medicine
• Assess and record a patient’s progress
• Research the latest treatments to ensure the quality of patient care
• Conduct or participate in outreach programs, talking to groups about managing diseases and promoting wellness

In home health care, a physician assistant works collaboratively on a team of clinicians—including PAs, NPs, and physicians—to go out into the community and provide homebound patients with primary care, complex care management, advanced care planning, and health coaching.

Physician Assistants are unsung heroes and deserve their moment in the limelight, so this week is to celebrate them and be thankful for their efforts.

Every October, special emphasis is given to the awareness of breast cancer. This movement is intended to inform people of the risks of breast cancer as well as what can be done to prevent and/or address it.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women. Most breast cancers are found in women 50 years old or older. Breast cancer occurs when cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast. Half of the newly diagnosed breast cancer occurs in women over age 60. About 20 percent come from women over 70. After age 80, the chances of developing breast cancer begin to decrease.

While there are factors that can increase a woman’s chance of having breast cancer, it is important to know that most women who are diagnosed have no family history of the disease and no known risk factors. Some of these factors include:
🔹Being over age 60.
🔹White women are a little more likely than African-American women to develop breast cancer, although that gap has been closing in recent years.
o Women who go through menopause after age 55 have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer.
o Having a first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer almost doubles a woman’s risk. Two first-degree relatives increase her risk by about three-fold.

Although screenings do not prevent breast cancer, early detection is critical to successful treatment:
 Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early – often before a woman notices any changes or symptoms. Annual mammograms help track changes in breast tissue.
 A physical examination, by a healthcare professional or self-exam by the woman, is another way to find changes in the breasts that can indicate cancer.

Treating older patients with breast cancer can be challenging. Treatment plans depend on the type of cancer, the size of the tumor, if it has spread and many other factors. Seniors need extra attention because they are more likely to have chronic conditions that can be triggered or exacerbated by certain drugs or treatments.

If a senior loved one notices symptoms of breast cancer, have them visit the doctor as soon as possible. When making the appointment, note the symptoms they have experienced. Several organizations work to promote breast cancer awareness to both educate the public and provide support to the diagnosed. Here at Maximum Care Inc., we work with seniors' health care teams to provide the information and support they need for optimal outcomes.

✨5 Topics you should discuss with aging parents✨

You may have visited your parents lately and noticed your mom needs a little “extra” help, or your father is a little more forgetful than usual. At some point, you may conclude that you need to have a candid conversation with your parents about aging, potential lifestyle changes and plans.

Although it can be a difficult task, it’s important to start the conversation early as possible and not wait until something happens that forces an immediate lifestyle change. While there are potentially many topics for discussion, you’ll want to discuss some of the major categories, including medical care, legal and finances, living arrangements and home safety. While each of these topics is important, choose what you feel is essential to discuss first and expect to have multiple conversations.

👨🏻‍⚕️MEDICAL CARE
Do you know what medications your parents take? Or if there is one coordinating doctor or multiple physicians? It may be necessary to communicate directly with medical providers and stay informed about your parents’ medical care. To speak with medical providers, you’d likely need permission and possibly a signed medical release form.

📑LEGAL AND FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS
There are many types of legal and financial documents your aging parents may want to start gathering. Some of the most important documents include:
• Will and Trust
• Durable Power of Attorney (for both healthcare and finances)
• Contact information for Parent’s Attorney, Doctor’s Office and Insurance Company

It’s not only important for your parents to have these documents, but you should also know where this information is and have access.

🏡LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
According to AARP, most seniors would like to live in their current homes for as long as possible. However, having a solid plan is a key factor in aging in place. If your parents fall into the 90% that want to spend their golden years at home, you’ll want to start thinking about and discussing home health services and home modifications that may need to be made for successful independent living.

📟HOME SAFETY
If your parents decide to age in place, there are many things to consider from a safety perspective.
• Reducing fall risk. Falls are a common occurrence for aging adults and one of the leading causes of injury for age 65 and older.
• Accessing help in an emergency can be made easier with medical alert devices, GPS tracking devices and telehealth services.
• Security. Unfortunately, criminals make security cameras, alarms systems, and window locks an essential part of home safety.

📭HOME MODIFICATIONS
Home modifications may need to be made to make the home more accessible. For example, grab bars or railings in bathrooms and bedrooms may need to be installed to help prevent slip-and-fall injuries.

There are many things to discuss with your aging parents, and these five topics are just a start to what could be a long and difficult conversation. The decisions that need to be made don’t get any easier with time, so it’s important to engage in the conversation and start making plans as soon as possible.

Getting older is an inevitable part of life. It’s something that we all must face, and although it has its challenges, it also has its perks. Here are some interesting facts about getting older:

1. Age is just a number. While it’s true that your body may not be able to do everything it once could, getting older is not a reflection of your ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

2. Your brain is getting sharper. Contrary to popular belief, your ability to learn, process information, and think critically actually improves with age.

3. You’re more resilient than you think. Studies have shown that older people are often more adept at dealing with stress and handling challenge.

4. You’re less likely to indulge in risky behaviors. As you get older, you become less likely to engage in risky behaviors like drinking too much alcohol, smoking, or driving too fast.

5. You become more financially stable. Many people find that as they get older, their financial situation becomes more stable, allowing them to enjoy their retirement years.

6. Your taste buds change. Your taste buds become less sensitive as you age, which can actually make certain foods taste better.

7. You may have more health problems. Unfortunately, as you get older, you are more likely to develop chronic health conditions like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions.

8. You have more time for hobbies and interests. As you retire or work less, you will likely have more time to pursue hobbies and interests that you may not have had time for earlier in life.

9. You may need less sleep. As you age, you may find that you need less sleep to feel rested, which can free up more time for other activities.

10. You’re wiser. With age comes wisdom, which can help you navigate life’s ups and downs with greater ease.

Overall, getting older can be a mixed bag of experiences, but there are certainly many advantages to growing older. You should cherish the years you have and make the most of them.

✨Helping a person with Alzheimer's get dressed✨

Alzheimer's can turn even the simplest of tasks into great trials. In the middle and later stages of the disease, many people have difficulty dressing themselves. Here are a few pointers to help simplify the task of helping a person with Alzheimer's get dressed.

1️. Shop together. If at all possible you should take the person with Alzheimer's disease when you shop for their clothes. Letting them select some of their favorite items will make the new clothes seem familiar and they will be more likely to wear them.

2. Buy duplicates. If your parent often insists on wearing that "favorite outfit" constantly, consider buying several identical sets.

3. Look for simplicity. Choose clothing that is easy to get on and off. Elastic waists and Velcro enclosures minimize struggles with buttons and zippers.

4. Give them choices. This can be tricky because a person with dementia can have trouble making decisions if there are too many options present. To avoid frustration and potential tantrums, give them a few choices, preferably no more than three. Lay out the clothes on a bed or dresser so the person with Alzheimer's can easily see them.

5. Give them time. Depending on how advanced the person's dementia is, it may take longer than normal for them to select their outfit and dress themselves. Be patient, and schedule enough time so that delays in the dressing process don't interfere with other plans.

6. Establish order. Arrange the clothes in the order they are to be put on to help the person move through the process.

7. Be positive and open. Encouragement and compliments go a long way to helping a person with Alzheimer's disease feel content with their clothing choices. This includes supporting decisions that you may not necessarily agree with. As long as it doesn't endanger the elderly person, let them wear a dress to bed or a sweatshirt in warm weather.

If your loved one is experiencing Alzheimer’s and is having trouble with activities of daily living, here at Maximum Care we have professional caregivers that can help.

09/18/2023

Sept. 18 is the annual observance of the National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAAD). It is a day of observance that brings light to the challenges that the aging population faces in regards to HIV/AIDS.

Americans that are 55 and older have a greater chance of getting diagnosed with HIV late in the course of the disease, which means a later start to treatment and potentially more damage to the person's immune system.

According to the AIDS Institute, increased awareness for an aging population is necessary. While treatment options have improved over the decades, prevention and testing are still necessary. The observance reminds us that age doesn’t eliminate the risk of HIV/AIDS.

Raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and aging
• Educate older people about the importance of preventing risky behaviors using age-sensitive information and education.
• Fight stigma.
• Deliver effective prevention and evidence-based interventions for antiretroviral adherence therapy for older Americans.
• Encourage physicians to screen patients of all ages for HIV infections.

If you know of an elderly struggling with this topic, please encourage them to ask for help. Here at Maximum Care, we have professionals willing to help.
