At The Buckeye Ranch, our Child Welfare Services team works every day to ensure the safety and well-being of children, youth, and families across our community.

Through programs that provide case management, parent skill-building, foster care placement and training, independent living skills, and ongoing support services, we help families thrive.

In Fiscal Year 2025, these services supported 2,284 youth:

Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Programs – Bridges & My Place: 69
Permanent Family Solutions Network (PFSN): 1,806
Foster Care/Healing Alternatives for Youth (HAY): 409

Every number represents a life touched, a family strengthened, and a future made brighter.

During last week’s level 3 snow emergency, our incredible 24/7 team members worked together to ensure that full-time care services at The Buckeye Ranch continued safely and uninterrupted. ❤️

To our Residential Treatment Services team in Grove City, our My Place team in Columbus, and all other essential team members, thank you for showing up, staying present, and continuing to provide critical support to the youth and families who rely on us, even in the most challenging conditions.

A special thank you as well to our Maintenance and Facilities team. Your hard work to keep our locations accessible, safe, and warm made it possible for services to continue. ❄️

We are deeply grateful for every team member who planned ahead, braved the weather, and worked around the clock to keep our services running and our clients youth and families cared for. Across generations, Black communities have forged pathways of healing through storytelling, faith, music, mutual aid, and everyday acts of care.

That history of resilience shapes how we support youth mental health today: centering culture, honoring lived experience, and building trusted spaces where young people feel seen, safe, and strong.

Throughout February, we will highlight connections between heritage and healing, and share resources that honor lived experience. When we connect heritage to healing, we help young people grow with courage and hope.

We’re thrilled to announce that Vickie Thompson-Sandy, President and CEO of The Buckeye Ranch, has been named a finalist for the CEO of the Year Award in the Large Nonprofit category by Columbus CEO

This recognition celebrates executives whose leadership and organizational impact truly set them apart. The awards are peer-voted by top leaders across Columbus, including past honorees — making this honor especially meaningful.

More than 30 nominees appeared on the ballot, representing some of the most influential leaders in our region. Four winners and a select group of finalists were named based on votes from fellow executives.

Meet Laya, a former resident at The Buckeye Ranch's independent living program, My Place⭐

TW: The blog mentioned below includes references to self-harm, abuse, and neglect.

Growing up in and out of unstable living environments, Laya faced abuse, neglect, and the weight of anxiety, depression, and self-harm. This all changed in 2025, when she was connected with My Place at The Buckeye Ranch — a Transitional Age Youth (TAY) program offering independent housing, educational assistance, and vocational supports for youth ages 16–21 who are aging out of foster care.

With a safe apartment and autonomy over her day-to-day, Laya found the stability to heal, lower her anxiety, and make space for the art that helps her process and grow. She graduated high school early and will pursue a bachelor’s degree in game design at Full Sale University this fall. 🌟

Laya has a bright future ahead, and we can’t wait to cheer her on as she shines her light and spreads hope!

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

According to the U.S department of state, there are estimated to be more than 27.6 million people subjected to human trafficking around the world. According to Unicef, rounly 28% of these individuals are children – nearly 8 million.

Human Trafficking is an issue that impacts the safety, well-being, and mental health of each of us, and we all have a responsibility to help.

If you are in the United States and believe someone may be a victim of human trafficking, call the 24-hour National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or report an emergency to law enforcement by calling 911.
