A Mom’s Story: A son that struggled with Sensory Processing issues, anger management and night terrors.
Let us introduce Tucker. He is our March patient of the month. Tucker started out as an infant with sleep issues and was always fussy. As he grew up, his mom noticed that noises and large crowds would set him off, he had anger issues and would fly off the handle at the littlest things. He also struggled with night terror.
Here is his mom’s story:
When Tucker started with Dr. Paul I was stuck in place not knowing what to do with my son’s SPD. We had already been in OT for a long time, exited due to insurance denials, gone to therapists and classes on effective communication for children with disorders, I had read all the books I could possibly read and found myself needing to try something new in order to really get a break through.
Tucker began at the perfect time, right before school started. I was able to compare classroom behaviors and at home behaviors and really keep track of the sensory meltdowns. Within a few weeks, the melt downs decreased at home. His meltdowns included screaming, crying, kicking, and punching that could last from 5 minutes to 45 minutes just by entering a grocery store. We went from sometimes multiple a day to 1-2 a week. We had experienced the decrease in waves during OT before but never found it to last long. Tucker began self-regulation, telling us more about his feelings and taking himself out of situations that would typically bring on a crash. We also noticed how he increased in tactile sensory input, this is something that he would always steer away from; things like electronic toothbrushes, strange textured foods, slime, etc.
We still experience lapses after a long day in high sensory input situations, but it’s nothing compared to before. Tucker still craves proprioception and needs the heavy movement input, but now we have an appropriate outlet and he knows where to go and how to ask for this. SPD is hard on children and parents; our whole house has benefitted from Dr. Paul and his knowledge. We have a better relationship now that our house isn’t on edge and having to make back up plans to the back plans every time we leave the house. It’s been over 6 months and the progress Tucker has made, thanks to Dr. Paul, is outstanding.
Thank you for letting us share his story and journey with you. If you know someone who struggles with issues such as Tuckers, please reach out to us.
