It's a celebration!

Don’t miss the 2018 Waccamaw Siouan Pow Wow Friday and Saturday, October 19-20. Since 1970 the event has created cultural awareness and understanding of the indigenous Waccamaw Siouan people in the Buckhead community of Bolton, NC. Now in its 48th year, the annual Pow Wow is a capstone of the many activities of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe, aimed at improving lives.

Pamela Jacobs, Vice Chair of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Council, says the Pow Wow is for the entire community. “We are looking forward to a wonderful event this year as we share our traditions and ways with everyone.” Each year the Pow Wow invites area schools to explore American Indian Beading Technique, pottery, basket making and more.

The Pow Wow boasts a hefty itinerary including a Veterans Honoring Ceremony, a Drumming Competition, and Pamela’s favorite, Dance Specials. The most popular event is the Parade, held Saturday at 11 a.m. before Grand Entry. “Everyone brings out their lawn chairs. People come from other counties and states to attend our annual Parade,“ says Pow Wow Chair Reah Jacobs.

A complete Pow-Wow Schedule, as well as the rich Waccamaw Siouan history, is detailed at www.waccamaw-siouan.net.

The fewer the legs, the better the meat.

Move over fad diets—In fitness circles all over, the focus is on clean eating. The term sounds a lot nicer, but what is clean eating exactly? Jeff and Cindy Faulk, the owners of Body Shapers Gym in Whiteville, help hundreds reach their nutrition and exercise goals. They say clean eating is as simple as it sounds.

"Everybody’s got a different version,” Jeff mused as he rattled off technical approaches like keto and vegan methods. But he and his wife Cindy offer a back-to-basics approach to clients at the gym. “Basically, it’s where you’re trying to eliminate processed foods from the diet,” Cindy stated.

Sound complicated? Not really. Cindy gave a couple of suggestions when getting started. “Steer away from the interior of the grocery store and shop the perimeter…Think of anything that’s grown; your vegetables, your fruits, your meats—those things are clean.” She also emphasized the importance of how those healthy foods are prepared, discouraging frying.

Cindy added another helpful rule of thumb when selecting clean meats. “The fewer the legs, the better the meat. So, fish is obviously your best-- it doesn’t have any legs-- then chicken. Your four-legged animals are going to be higher in fat.”

So, there you have it. The new clean eating trend is really an old-fashioned bit of common sense: Eat your fruits and vegetables. It never goes out of style.

Speaking of fruits and vegetables, don't miss the Farm-To-Table Fundraising Dinner sponsored by the Columbus County CommunityFarmers Market on Sept. 22. The menu will highlight items in peak season. The tickets are $40, and you can purchase them at the farmers market on Saturdays or by calling 252.588.0300.

Take Ten

With Labor Day a week away, folks are lacing up for this year’s Take the Lake on Sept 1-3. Now a fixture on Columbus County’s annual events docket, the weekend of personal endurance challenges celebrates its 10th birthday. Over the three days, participants may enter any of four challenges around the mighty Lake Waccamaw: the 16-mile walk/run, the 16-mile bike & hike, the 14-mile paddle around the lake or the 4-mile swim across. A 10K Family Fun Walk and 10K Family Fun Ride will start at Elizabeth Brinkley Park on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Those wanting to take it up a notch may enter TTL X-treme, for a small registration fee. X-treme combines all four events for an intense, 48-mile race.

Fun features are planned around the county to help celebrate 10 years of Take the Lake, according to TTL Director Julie Stocks. No matter what your fitness level, Take the Plate provides the perfect excuse for pre-game carb loading, with pasta dinners served up Friday, Aug 31 at the Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. This year’s plate fundraiser will be extra special, recognizing the sponsors that make TTL happen each year. While there, diners may also peruse the shirts and trophies (better known as JAMAS) that have characterized a decade of Take the Lake.

Take the Lake includes all the fundamentals: food, fitness and fun—not to mention it’s free. Generous local partners and friends of TTL have kept the event free since 2008.

And so the countdown begins...

With the frenetic rhythm of modern family life, the first day of school can leave parents cramming the night before, getting school supplies, lunches and clothes ready for the big day. A few time and money-saving hacks can make this an A+ school year for both parents and kids.

Start with durable school supplies that can stand the test of time. Although book bags are dirt cheap at discount stores this time of year, resist the urge to buy one and opt for a high-quality bag. Brands like High Sierra and Jansport will take students from first grade through high school, requiring only laundering to ready them for a new school year. Likewise, purchase well-made uniforms that can be passed down to siblings. Before school starts, try getting several parents together to swap gently used uniforms.

Next, get routines in place to help kids adjust to a school frame of mind. Younger kids may enjoy making a countdown calendar marking the days until the first day of school. Phase out electronics binges with more stimulating activities during the last days of summer. Late-start summer camps, trips to the library and evenings at the playground will refresh your children and spark creativity, making them ready to learn. A little extra activity will also get them primed for earlier bedtimes. A few days before school starts, practice going to bed and waking earlier, so that the 6 a.m. alarm clock is less of a jolt to the system.

Finally, keep schedules simple this school year. When possible, limit the number of extracurricular activities that take up your weeknights. You can achieve this by keeping all kids’ activities in one night or focusing on one or two children’s activities at a time. The extra time gained could mean less rushing and more talks around the dinner table, which goes a long way in your child’s development. Build in more family togetherness and relaxation by taking a late summer getaway during Labor Day or fall break for year-round schoolers. It will break up the fast pace and give your family something to look forward to in the midst of the busyness that a school year brings.
