The fewer the legs, the better the meat.
Move over fad diets—In fitness circles all over, the focus is on clean eating. The term sounds a lot nicer, but what is clean eating exactly? Jeff and Cindy Faulk, the owners of Body Shapers Gym in Whiteville, help hundreds reach their nutrition and exercise goals. They say clean eating is as simple as it sounds.
"Everybody’s got a different version,” Jeff mused as he rattled off technical approaches like keto and vegan methods. But he and his wife Cindy offer a back-to-basics approach to clients at the gym. “Basically, it’s where you’re trying to eliminate processed foods from the diet,” Cindy stated.
Sound complicated? Not really. Cindy gave a couple of suggestions when getting started. “Steer away from the interior of the grocery store and shop the perimeter…Think of anything that’s grown; your vegetables, your fruits, your meats—those things are clean.” She also emphasized the importance of how those healthy foods are prepared, discouraging frying.
Cindy added another helpful rule of thumb when selecting clean meats. “The fewer the legs, the better the meat. So, fish is obviously your best-- it doesn’t have any legs-- then chicken. Your four-legged animals are going to be higher in fat.”
So, there you have it. The new clean eating trend is really an old-fashioned bit of common sense: Eat your fruits and vegetables. It never goes out of style.
