Your Ultimate Self-Defense Blueprint: 4 Must-Know Skills

Self-defense isn't just about fighting—it's about prevention and precision. These four skills cover everything you need to know, from making yourself a hard target to escaping a life-threatening situation.

1. The Confidence Shield (Prevention)
Your first defense is projecting that you are not an easy target. Master situational awareness to stay alert and project confidence through your body language (strong posture, eye contact, and walking with purpose). Criminals look for the easiest mark; don't give them one.

2. High-Impact Strikes (Precision)
When confrontation is unavoidable, use simple moves that require no strength but deliver maximum pain. These low-level strikes target sensitive areas to create an immediate opening for escape:
- Foot Stomp & Shin Scr**e: Use your heel or the edge of your shoe to rake down the shin bone or stomp the instep/ankle. The shin has no muscle protection, making this move highly disabling in close quarters.
- The Eye Gouge/Jab: This is the ultimate last resort. A quick jab to the eyes (using one or two fingers) requires minimal force but is instantly disorienting, giving you the critical seconds needed to flee.

Your Survival Mindset
Remember, the goal in any self-defense situation is escape, not to win a fight. Use your confidence to deter, your awareness to anticipate, and your precision to create the opportunity to run.

Stay safe, stay sharp!

The Interpersonal Violence Prevention Education Team wants to express our gratitude for all Warhawks for attending and participating in our events pertaining to domestic violence awareness in honor of It's On Us Week! From providing words of encouragement to wearing purple clothes/ribbons, students showed their support in various ways! Thank you, everyone! Be on the lookout for our future events and campaigns this semester!

In the U.S., an average of 24 people per minute are victims of r**e, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner—that's more than 12 million women and men each year (thehotline.org). Learning self-defense is about providing options, building confidence, and reclaiming your power.

Interpersonal Violence Prevention Education has collaborated with UWW Campus Police to highlight key strategies for safety and self-protection:

Physical Self-Defense: Maximum Impact
In a dangerous situation, the goal is to create space and escape. Focus on high-impact techniques:

Strike Zones: Target vulnerable, easily accessible areas, like the eyes, throat, or groin.

If you or someone you know is in danger, please call campus police by dialing 911 or contact The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) for additional support/resources

Shine a Light: Purple Thursday Reminder

Today, we observe Purple Thursday during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). It's a day to visibly show our commitment to supporting survivors and bringing this critical issue out of the shadows.

Here's how you can participate today:
- Wear Purple: Put on your best purple to show your solidarity.
- Visit Our Table in the UC today until 2PM: Come see us today to pick up key items:
* A purple ribbon to wear.
* A purple paper ribbon to display on your door.
* An LED candle for tonight's visual show of support.

Light Up the Night tonight at 8 PM: This is the most important part. Tonight at 8:00 PM, we're asking everyone to place their LED candle in their window. Let's create a visual wave of support across campus so that every domestic violence survivor who sees it knows they are not alone and that their campus community supports them.

Thank you for helping us shine a light on this important issue.

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that access to care saves lives — especially in times of crisis. 🌿

This year’s theme, “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reminds us that mental health support is just as vital as physical aid.

Here at UHCS, we’re committed to ensuring that every Warhawk has access to counseling, crisis support, and wellness resources — because mental health care should never wait for an emergency. 💜

Whether you need someone to talk to, support through a tough time, or tools to manage stress, UHCS is here for you — every day, not just in crisis.

Visit uww.edu/uhcs or call (262) 472-1305 to learn more about our counseling and crisis services.
