Obituary for Gayle Katherine Faulkner Kosalko:

Gayle Katherine Faulkner Kosalko, 76, proudly of Whiting, Indiana, passed away on March 6, 2026. Born on March 30, 1949, Gayle shared 52 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Charles “Chuck” Kosalko. Together they raised two daughters, Jonna Kosalko (Dan Rabin) and Holly Kosalko, who were the pride and joy of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Thomas and Florence Faulkner. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Joyce (Georg) Retzloff and Margaret (Jeff) Kosalko; many nieces and nephews and her feline companion, “Bella”.

Family was the heart of everything for Gayle. Her life was defined by the love she gave, the stories she shared, the community she uplifted, and the laughter she brought wherever she went. She embraced many roles with grace and joy—daughter, wife, mother, cousin, teacher, writer, collector, historian, confidant, and friend. Although not born in Whiting, Gayle moved there as a child and quickly embraced it as her lifelong home. She attended Sacred Heart School and Whiting High School, majored in theatre at Clarke College in Iowa, further studied English at Calumet College, and later pursued a master’s degree in Music at Indiana University Northwest. Over her lifetime, she became one of Whiting’s most devoted champions helping shape its culture, preserve its stories, and strengthen its sense of identity.

Gayle’s lifelong love of theatre began as a young person, attending shows in Chicago with her mother, Florence, often followed by a meal at the Berghoff. She and Chuck first met while performing Fiddler on the Roof at the Marian Theatre Guild, beginning not only a shared life but a shared artistic journey. Although she performed in many plays and musicals, Gayle shone brightest behind the scenes. She founded the Pennsylvania Avenue Players, a children’s theatre group rooted in the motto, “no small parts, only small actors.” What began as backyard plays grew to full productions with costumes, sets and orchestra, housed at the Marian Theatre Guild auditorium. Gayle created, wrote, directed, and produced these musical productions for years with the help of other parents and friends—a true celebration of creativity, humor, and community spirit. She also wrote touring children’s plays with The Not Ready for Primary Time Players. One of her most memorable roles was the Poet in A…My Name is Alice. And in the theatre community, she was affectionately known as the Queen of Corn. Gayle was an avid reader, TV and movie watcher, and an enthusiastic traveler, always with Chuck by her side. An evening with her often included a game night of board games, trivia, card games, or Boggle. A lifelong Catholic, she served her faith community by playing organ at Sacred Heart Church and piano at Saints Peter and Paul Church for the Spanish-speaking Masses, even while being a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church. She shared her creativity and deep love of learning through teaching at Sacred Heart, Gavit High School, and St. Mary’s School touching the lives of countless students. While raising her daughters, she also wrote features for The Hammond Times and had regular columns “Cook of the Week” and “Dessert of the Week.”

A tireless advocate for the Whiting/Robertsdale community, Gayle served as Executive Director of the Whiting/Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce, where she launched The WRite Stuff newspaper and created beloved icons such as Mr. Pierogi and the Pieroguettes, helping shape the identity and growing success of the annual Pierogi Fest. Her creativity influenced many local events including the roaming Bunch O’ Bunnies at the Easter Parade, Studio 659, the Annual Groundhog Day Gala, the Whiting Garden Walk, and Dark in the Park. Her leadership was persuasive, and full of heart—if Gayle asked you to volunteer, you almost never said no. And wherever Gayle was, Chuck was not far behind, equally woven into every project with a Swiss army knife, cardboard and duct tape, ready to fashion Gayle’s ideas into reality. Her deep love of history shaped so many aspects of her life, both personally and publicly. She was the family historian, making sure the memories were shared, recorded and remembered. At the Whiting-Robertsdale Historical Society, she designed exhibits illuminating the city’s rich past, its residents, and its legacy. She believed deeply that stories matter, and she worked passionately to preserve them. She received several volunteer awards, including the Calumet College Brother Gerard VonHagel Alumni of the Year (an award Gayle and Chuck shared together), the Elks’ Citizen of the Year, and notably, a Fellow of Purdue Northwest’s Society of Innovators. Her life is a reminder that leadership can be quiet, influence can be local and lasting, and legacy often begins simply with choosing to care. Gayle and Chuck’s home on brick-lined Pennsylvania Avenue was filled with gardens, ephemera, multiple collections and antiques – one kid visitor to the house exclaimed, “This house is like a museum!” Her aesthetic was always present, whether in her home or her work offices. In the 2000’s they undertook a major exterior renovation to the home they bought in 1975 to enhance it with features of Queen Anne style gingerbread inspired by touring historic homes, a favorite vacation pastime. We celebrate everything Gayle gave—to her family, to her community, and to all who were blessed by her presence, warmth, and especially her humor and creativity. As E.B. White said in Charlotte’s Web, “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer.” Gayle was both.

He was a devoted father to Cindy (Mike Ormes) Bailey and the late Johnny J. Boguszewicz. Joe was a proud and cherished grandfather to Shalena Bailey, Stacey Bailey-Negrete, Emily (Kathleen) Shattuck, and an adoring great-grandfather to Briana (Reyes), Olivia, Breccan, Nolan, Jiovanni, and Liliana. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him endless pride and joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Joe was also the dear uncle of Les (Cheryl) Gibbs. Joe was born on June 21, 1937, in Roby, Indiana, to Joseph and Grace (née Paskis) Boguszewicz. He remained a proud lifelong member of the Whiting-Robertsdale community and a devoted member of New Life Christian Church. Joe dedicated 50 years of hard work to Amaizo, where he was known as a true “jack of all trades.” Over the years he shared his skills and knowledge with others and eventually taught welding before retiring in 2002. He took pride not only in his work, but also in the friendships he built throughout the years. Those who knew Joe knew he lived life with enthusiasm, humor, and a sense of adventure. In his younger years he even rode bulls with a traveling rodeo show and would ride his horse to work at Amaizo and the horse would walk itself home. He also enjoyed playing the drums with several bands, fishing, hunting, and cheering on his favorite teams—the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. Joe was deeply connected to his community and stayed active in many local organizations, including the YMCA, SOKOL, the Hammond Disability Commission, Crime Watch, the Moose Lodge, and the Whiting Gun Club. He believed in helping others and being involved in the community he loved. Above all else, Joe’s greatest joy in life was his family. He loved gathering with them, sharing stories, laughter, and memories that will be cherished forever. His home and heart were always open, and his family knew they could count on his strength, guidance, and steady presence. He took great pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow, and nothing meant more to him than the time spent surrounded by those he loved. Joe will be remembered for his generous heart, his adventurous spirit, and the deep love he had for his family. Though he may be gone from our sight, the stories he told, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave will live on through the generations he leaves behind. His legacy is not only in the life he lived, but in the family who will carry his memory forward with love, laughter, and gratitude for having had him in their lives. (219) 659-4400.

Obituary for Ellen Jeanne Miller:Ellen Jeanne Miller, born August 14,1942 to James and Marion Davis in Chicago, Illinois...

Obituary for Ellen Jeanne Miller:

Ellen Jeanne Miller, born August 14,1942 to James and Marion Davis in Chicago, Illinois, was first and foremost an independent woman with a passion for living, a passion for loving, and a passion for family. She married Richard, the love of her life, who passed last April, and she could not wait to join him in heaven. After 58 years of marriage, they were two people who not only loved each other but were still in love, frequently holding hands and always kissing each other goodnight. Richard was so in love with her and always put her first.

The first part of their journey together was spent raising a family in Whiting, Indiana. During these years she worked in her children’s schools in ways that supported her creativity and allowed for her role as Mom. In retirement Ellen found happiness working with flowers, crafting, decorating and redecorating their beautiful home. Working on her many creative projects fueled her soul. One that stands out the most is the mural she painted of her grandchildren playing at the beach in the basement of their home on Ridgewood Drive. Other paintings and crafts still adorn the homes of her family and friends, each with a special meaning behind them.

Ellen,“Elly”, had the special ability to create a warm and welcoming home. She made a home here in South Haven for family gatherings and for her grandchildren to experience what it meant to have a grandmother. That experience lasted into their adult lives, and some were able to share that with their children. Bringing her to her cherished role as “Gigi”. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh, as well as a sense of adventure and imagination. She shared all of this with her family and friends, leaving behind so many stories yet to be told and treasured by all of us.

Ellen is survived by her four beautiful daughters who grew up to be her best friends; Laura Peyton, Cathy (Don) Po**en, Kim (Danny) James, Michelle Miller, and her “favorite son” John Peyton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, upon whom she certainly left her mark; Rachael Nanny, Melissa Nanny, Melanie (Peyton) Lenardic, Jessica (Peyton) Stappas, Michael Adam, Neil Adam, Katie Lauren James, Zach James, Bailey Sobjack, Jacob Hoggard, and Brad Hoggard. In addition, she was blessed with ten great grandchildren: Ava, Casen, Meara, Maeve, Mila, Ariana, Mina, Evy, Leo, and Kosta.

She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved brothers Rick and Randy Davis.

Ellen and Rich were faithful members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in South Haven for 30 years. In addition, Ellen leaves behind many dear family and friends, too numerous to mention here but know that she loved you all and wanted only to be remembered in life rather than in death, an easy request for all of us who were blessed to know her. May her memory live in our hearts forever.

Visitation for Ellen will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 12 p.m. until the time of her Funeral Service at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 718 Arbor Ct., South Haven, Michigan 49090.

Please consider a donation in honor of Ellen to Corwell Hospice or St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. To those who choose to leave a memory or condolence please visit: www.starksfamilyfh.com Arrangements are entrusted to Filbrandt Chapel-Starks Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. 269-637-0333.

Obituary for Kathryn Kalwinski (nee Kiraly)

On Monday, January 26th, 2026 the physical world lost a shooting star, but the spiritual world gained one. Kathryn Kalwinski (nee Kiraly), 71, of Whiting, Indiana passed away peacefully at 7:30 in the morning with immediate family at her side and in the comfort of her home. Kathryn’s soul now rests with the Lord and reunites with her beloved Kiraly family who preceded her in death: Andrew Kiraly (father, 1980), Ann Kiraly (mother, 2017), Ann Marie Timko (née Kiraly, sister, 2022), William Kiraly (brother, 1984), and Christine Kiraly (sister, 2000), along with numerous deeply loved and thoroughly spoiled Labrador Retrievers. Kathryn leaves behind her devoted and loving husband, best friend, and companion of 52 wonderful years, Myron, and her cherished only child, Nicholas. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles from both the Kiraly and Kalwinski families. There are two very special people who merit mention for the unwavering love, friendship, and support they brought into Kathryn’s life: Jeffery Myers and Ronald Benko, both of the Whiting/Robertsdale neighborhood.

Kathryn was born in East Chicago on September 25, 1954, and raised in the Robertsdale neighborhood of Hammond/Whiting. From an early age, she was curious, inquisitive, and deeply observant of the world around her. Meticulous by nature, she paid close attention to detail in everything she did. During her grade school and middle school years, she mastered the art of calligraphy, later turning her studious nature and beautiful handwriting into supplemental income by writing academic essays for upperclassmen and college students who were acquaintances. During high school, Kathryn served as captain of the George Rogers Clark High School Speech and Debate Team, which was ranked number one in the State of Indiana at the time. Her specialty was the impromptu portion of the competitions. In her senior year, she was nominated and elected Class President. She concluded her high school career with numerous scholarships and awards. Immediately following graduation, Kathryn accepted a full scholarship to Calumet College of St. Joseph, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication in just two years. She later went on to earn her Master’s degree in Education from Purdue University. Kathryn enjoyed a dynamic and versatile professional career. She worked at Wisconsin Steel as a Quality Control Supervisor in the 40-inch Mill. She later followed her passion for education, teaching speech and theater at Sacred Heart School in Whiting, Indiana. Her career then led her to Chicago, where she served as Maintenance Supervisor at the Regents Park luxury condominium buildings overlooking Lake Michigan in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Kathryn later moved to the River North district, where she became Assistant Director of Operations for Friedman Properties, a major presence in Chicago’s downtown and River North development scene. Toward the end of her tenure with Friedman Properties, she was promoted to serve as Albert Friedman’s personal assistant, a role she fulfilled with dedication and pride until her retirement. In retirement, Kathryn embraced a role that brought her great joy – serving as Team Manager for her son’s AAA travel hockey team (Chicago Young Americans) based out of Lake Forest, Illinois. In this role, she poured her energy, organization, and love into supporting the team as they traveled and competed throughout North America, creating lasting memories along the way. Kathryn was an avid reader often enjoying content that involved mysteries and stories that held a criminal forensics edge. Her all-time favorite was Sherlock Homes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and enjoyed all of his novels and short stories. Kathryn’s love and collection of books allowed her to make a donation of over 1,000 books from her own personal library to the Indiana Veterans Home (a Veterans Administration facility) in West Lafayette, Indiana. As a child, Kathryn began her collection of vintage post cards and throughout the duration of her life amassed a collection of over 10,000 pieces of American history. Kathryn was an avid fisherman and dearly loved embarking on annual vacations to Leech Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish in Minnesota with Myron, her husband. Her personal record was a 51” Muskellunge (“Muskie”)! Throughout her life, Kathryn also enjoyed adding to and organizing her collection of vintage fishing lures and Federal Duck Stamps that spanned the 1930’s through the 2000’s. Musically, Kathryn was an avid fan of classic rock-and-roll and disco, often suggesting that there was “something magical” about disco music.

The Kalwinski family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff, surgeons, and medical professionals at Munster Community Hospital; all of whom did everything they possibly could to save her life during the final stages of her battle against cancer. We also want to thank Hospice of the Calumet Area for their kind, supportive, and compassionate work with our family and with Kathryn during Kathryn’s final days. Kathryn will be remembered for her intelligence, discipline, kindness, and fierce devotion to her family. She lived with purpose, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of strength, grace, and unwavering loyalty to those she held close. Kathryn was a humble person to her core and made lasting impressions with all who were fortunate to have met and loved her. She is now pain free and enjoying the comfort of our Lord, Jesus Christ...with a fishing rod in hand! Per her final wishes, Kathryn will be cremated and there will be no services or ceremonies. Kathryn always valued face-to-face quality time with the people that she loved in life and wanted to leave this world in that same manner. Her final resting place will be at the Fort Custer Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Whiting “Gimme Shelter” (for pets) P.O. Box 591, Whiting, Indiana 46394, would be appreciated. Expressions of sympathy may be shared on-line at www.baranfh.com.
