Ever wonder how much of your child’s speech you should understand?
Let’s define it by age, shall we?
Sometimes it becomes more clear that a child may need support after the holidays, when you’ve spent more time with family and around other children. While we don’t encourage comparison, it can sometimes help give perspective.
• Around 2 years: you should understand about 50% of what your child says
• Around 3 years: about 75% is understandable
• Around 4 years: about 90% should be clear, even to unfamiliar listeners
These are general guidelines based on research (Crowe & McLeod, 2020).
