Dealing with prior authorization delays is a struggle for many patients and physicians says Elisabeth Potter, MD, who specializes in breast reconstruction and plastic surgery. She has shared her frustrations with media and on social media, and is now sharing her experience with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, on his podcast, Let Doctors Be Doctors.

Great accomplishment Dr Brett May, another long time WCMS member.

Dr. Brett May, general surgeon and Chief Medical Information Officer at United Regional, has been selected for the Epic Provider Exemplar Program — a prestigious initiative that recognizes specialists who excel in using Epic’s electronic health record system. Selection is based on efficiency scores, personalization and satisfaction metrics, feature adoption, and contributions to organizational performance. Following a comprehensive evaluation by Epic staff, which included a review of his clinical workflows and customizations, Dr. May was invited to join the program. His efforts to streamline documentation and ordering processes, along with his commitment to improving the physician experience, distinguished him as a top candidate. With only about 60 physicians nationwide selected, his inclusion is a significant honor and a reflection of United Regional’s leadership within the Epic community. Despite being smaller than many Epic clients, United Regional consistently ranks as a high performer in leveraging Epic to enhance patient safety, outcomes, and satisfaction — underscoring our commitment to excellence and innovation in healthcare.

Since joining the Exemplar Program, Dr. May has played an active role in supporting other organizations. He assisted Health First in Florida during their Epic go-live, collaborated with Epic leaders in Wisconsin to develop educational content for surgical specialists, and contributed to training materials for surgeons, CEOs, and CIOs focused on implementing and optimizing Epic across their systems.

Dr. May’s journey with Epic also includes leading the implementation of Lumens, a specialized Epic functionality for endoscopy procedures such as bronchoscopies, colonoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies, and endoscopic ultrasounds. He worked closely with gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, and Epic’s team to successfully deploy Lumens at United Regional. He later presented the outcomes at the 2024 Epic Users Group Meeting, and United Regional has since hosted other organizations seeking guidance on their own Lumens implementations.

Thank you for all of your contributions to our organization, and congratulations on being selected for the Epic Provider Exemplar Program, Dr. May!
