As a clinician who utilizes both exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) and inference based cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT), it is incredibly important to clear up any misinformation that is said about either modality. When misinformation is spread, it affects people from finding therapies that can truly help them. Do not take information about ERP from somebody who is not trained in it. Do not take information about ICBT from somebody who is not trained in it. Misinformation hurts people.

Both OCD and Autism can involve routines, repetition, and distress when things feel “off.”
But the why behind those behaviors is what truly sets them apart ⤵️

OCD: Routines or rituals are done to relieve distress or prevent something bad from happening.
They’re driven by fear and intrusive thoughts that feel unwanted and distressing.

Autism: Routines or repetitive behaviors bring comfort, predictability, or sensory regulation.
They’re driven by need for structure or self-soothing, not fear.

· OCD is about doubt and distress — the person performs rituals to neutralize distress or prevent danger.

· Autism is about comfort and regulation — routines and repetition help navigate an unpredictable world.

❤️ Both deserve understanding — not judgment.

Both Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) involve intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors — but the focus of those thoughts sets them apart. BDD IS NOT BODY FOCUSED OCD!!!!!! OCD often centers on fears of harm, contamination, or moral responsibility, ect.
BDD focuses on perceived flaws in appearance — even when others can’t see them.

Both can bring deep distress, endless rituals, and a constant sense of “not enough.”
Both deserve understanding, not judgment.

Therapy like CBT/ERP/ACT and support can help break the cycle.
You are not your thoughts, and you are not your reflection. 💛

OCD and Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) can look similar — both involve repetitive actions that are hard to control.
But while OCD is driven by intrusive thoughts and anxiety, BFRBs are often driven by sensory urges or tension.

Not every repetitive behavior means OCD.
Sometimes it’s a Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior — a way your body tries to self-soothe by picking, biting, or pulling.

OCD = “I wash my hands because I’m afraid of contamination.”

BFRB = “I pick at my skin because it feels uneven or I feel an urge to do it.”

Different roots, similar struggles. Both deserve understanding, not shame. 💙
