What I tell myself when I’m feeling anxious:
1. My brain is giving the wrong signals, I’m safe.
2. I know how to cope, I trust myself.
3. This feeling won’t last forever.
4. Thank you for the “warning,” but I’m okay.
5. I accept this feeling.
6. I’m a total badass, I got this.
7. I’ve felt this way before, nothing bad happened.
8. I’m able to manage my feelings in a healthy way.
9. Anxiety won’t stop me from doing the things I want.
10. I don’t have to do this alone, I can ask for help.

One of the most useful tools I teach my clients is how to neutralize negative thoughts. Offering a counter-thought that neutralizes a negative thought is an effective way to combat anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. Above are some excellent examples on what neutralizing negative thoughts look like.

EMDR therapy (which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of trauma therapy. As an EMDR trained therapist I am better able to work with clients who suffer from trauma and guide them on an accelerated path to healing.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to stimulate the brain in ways not found in other methods of therapy to aid in and accelerate the processing of traumatic memories while also desensitizing clients to trauma triggers, providing an overall lessening of disturbance, distress, and symptoms. While primarily used with trauma, it can be used with other mental health diagnoses, including anxiety, panic, depression, and attachment wounds, to name a few.

As you scroll through your social feed and see people on vacation, relaxing with a face mask, or out on a dinner date, remember that these types of luxuries are only a small part of self-care (what we think self care looks like because that’s what we can see). The bigger stuff like changing negative patterns of thinking, setting boundaries for yourself and others, and healing from past wounds, is the underlying work being done within self-care (what self care looks like behind the scenes).

Today is and its purpose is to bring awareness to bipolar disorders and to end the social stigma that surrounds this condition. In sharing this post, I hope to promote acceptance. That you are not alone and that no one with this disorder should feel isolated, ashamed, or be afraid to talk about it.

📚 Book Recommendation📚

This is one of my favorite books (The Dance of Anger) and is one of the books I recommend most often to clients.

Anger is an emotion that is often misused, misunderstood, and feared. For many of us (especially those of us with that “Mid-west nice”) have anxiety around anger, regardless of whether we’re the giver or the receiver. Aimed to show how anger can be used as vehicle for change, Lerner takes deep rooted therapy concepts and explains them in a concise, simplified manner and demonstrates them using touching and illuminating stories.

I believe that The Dance of Anger, originally designed for women, is just as useful for men; truly for anyone that feels anxiety around anger, struggles with boundaries, feels compelled to ‘play nice’, is afraid of rejection, or in general would describe themselves as a ‘people-pleaser’. This book is small but mighty and, should you choose to read it, holds within it all the power to change your life.
