Many of us don't know that June 14th is the US Army's Birthday. Here are a couple other facts that you may not know as well;
June 1. "Don't give up the ship” day, the final words of James Lawrence during the war of 1812. The US Navy was under siege by Royal Britain and these were the last words of a fallen captain.
June 6, D-Day, marks the storming of Normandy, France by British, Canadian, and American troops in WWII. President Eisenhower put in his executive order on this day. Many sacrificed their lives for the liberation of France and the French people.
June 13, Bunker Hill Day, observed to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill. This battle took place as Boston was under siege during the Revolutionary War.
June 14, Flag Day, the adoption of the US Flag which originally carried the thirteen stars and stripes to remember the original thirteen colonies.
June 14, 1775, the continental congress voted to raise ten companies of riflemen in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. This was the effective birth of the United States Army.
June 15, 1775, George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.
June 23, the birthday of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
June 27, PTSD Awareness is observed, which highlights those who have gone to war and have been affected by post-traumatic stress disorder.
June 28, Operation Red Wings Observance, remembering a tight group of Navy Seals who were behind enemy lines in Hindu Kush, Afghanistan during a very important Reconnaissance mission. 3 of the 4 Elite Seals were killed on the ground in an ambush, and one of the two QRF helicopters sent in to aid was shot down killing all 8 US Navy Seals and all eight US Special Operations aviators on board.
June 1776, Congress set up the Board of War and Ordnance, the linear ancestor of the War Department.
There are hundreds more historical and important moments in our military history during the month of June and these are just some of the most known. Please take a moment to reflect on all the men and women who have died fighting for our freedom and our way of life. Its only through their sacrifice that we enjoy the liberties that we do.
