As temperatures drop and people bundle up, be aware of two severe cold-related illnesses –
hypothermia and frostbite. Both can be caused by wind chill and exposure to snow or wet conditions.
They can even happen in areas known for warmer weather. AMR offers these tips to help
you stay safe while spending time outside this winter.
• Wear a warm hat – 40 percent of body heat can escape through the scalp
• Wear mittens – they keep hands warmer than gloves
• Remove any clothing that gets wet as soon as possible
• Check on older adults frequently as age and some medications alter the body’s ability to sense
and adapt to temperature change
• If you suspect hypothermia or frostbite, call 911 for help immediatel
