We're pleased to share the announcement this week that Donna Sweet, M.D., AAHIVS, MACP, faculty member at KU School of Medicine-Wichita for almost 45 years, and physician at KU Wichita Medical Practice Association Midtown Clinic is the namesake for the new medical academic society at KU School of Medicine-Wichita.
The Sweet Society, the second medical academic society at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, will be open to the first-year class of medical students in 2027 after the school expands into the new Wichita Biomedical Campus.
"Dr. Donna Sweet has shaped KU School of Medicine-Wichita for more than four decades through extraordinary service as a physician, educator, mentor and advocate,” said Laura Tatpati, M.D., dean of KU School of Medicine-Wichita. “She leaves an imprint on clinical excellence and professionalism that extends far beyond the classroom. As KU School of Medicine-Wichita grows into its next chapter, this new society stands as a tribute to Dr. Sweet’s enduring legacy, excellence in education, leadership through service, and the belief that medicine is best when it is compassionate, courageous and community-centered.”
The new Sweet Society pin will feature a red ribbon and a representation of the iconic Blackbear Bosin Keeper of the Plains statue – usage was graciously permitted by the Nola Bosin Kimble estate.

February is a time to honor the achievements, resilience, and contributions of Black leaders and innovators.

It’s also an important time to acknowledge the health disparities that impact Black communities and continue our commitment to advancing health equity.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black Americans are disproportionately affected by conditions such as:
• High blood pressure and heart disease
• Stroke
• Diabetes
• Maternal health complications
• Certain cancers

Awareness is powerful—but action is essential. At KU Wichita Clinics, we are committed to:
✔️ Promoting preventive screenings and early detection
✔️ Providing culturally competent, compassionate care
✔️ Supporting education and outreach initiatives
✔️ Advocating for equitable access to healthcare

This Black History Month, we celebrate progress, recognize ongoing challenges, and stand dedicated to building a healthier future for every community.

Wearing red is more than a color choice—it’s a statement. Red reminds us to prioritize cardiac health, raise awareness about heart disease, and support the millions of people affected every day. By wearing red, we spark conversations, encourage prevention, and show solidarity for healthier hearts in our community.

KU Wichita Clinics are in full support of recognizing cardiac health and standing together for education, awareness, and heart-healthy futures. Let’s keep the conversation going—because every heartbeat matters. ❤️
