I’M NOT A NURSE
But I show up every day for report.
I’m NOT a nurse but I wash my residents daily and do full body inspections for anything “new” or any skin breakdown.
I’m NOT a nurse but I know all my residents’ diets, likes, dislikes, textures, and who’s at choking risk. I feed those who can no longer feed themselves.
I’m NOT a nurse but I do colostomy, ostomy, and catheter care.
I’m NOT a nurse but I take full sets of vitals and collect specimen samples for labs.
I’m NOT a nurse but I chart changes in a resident’s behavior and health.
I’m NOT a nurse but when the doctor asks how a resident is responding to new medication, I have the answers.
I’m NOT a nurse but I speak to family members and tell them how their loved one’s day is going.
I’m NOT a nurse but I know every resident by name when they’re doing a med pass.
I’m NOT a nurse but I’m called when someone needs help drawing blood from an aggressive resident.
I’m NOT a nurse but I sit with residents who are scared, upset, or lonely.
I’m NOT a nurse but I hold their hands, wipe their tears, and make them smile.
I’m NOT a nurse but I do their nails and curl their hair.
I’m NOT a nurse but I sign for hourly breath checks, DOS sheets, and turning schedules.
I’m NOT a nurse but I wash their bodies for the last time, wrap them in a shroud, and open the windows to let their spirit fly.
I’m NOT a nurse but I stand in the hallway with my coworkers, saying a prayer as the body is wheeled out.
I’m NOT a nurse but I go to their wake, hug their families, and tell them how much we’ll miss them.
I’M NOT A NURSE…
