“The place looks so beautiful with all those flags out there.”

It’s a common statement we hear when people visit on a holiday or other special occasion for the first time. On such days, 95 American flags adorn the campus of Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. It happens thanks to the efforts of local Veteran service organizations, led primarily by American Legion Posts and their Legion Riders.

“If I had to guess, it has been well over 20 years we have been placing flags at VA," said Post 4 Commander Kenny White.

Supported by Dole VA’s Facilities Management Service (FMS), who maintain both the flags and the holes the poles are placed into, it starts at 6:30 a.m. sharp.

"In the morning of any flag day, FMS has two employee volunteers here on site,” Maintenance & Repair Supervisor David Miller said. “They drive the flag trailer and help the Riders putting up the flags.”

Why do they all do it?

"It's the right thing to do," said White. “I realize that is not a great answer, but I have come to [believe] Wichita and all of Kansas are the most patriotic city and state I have seen.”

Joe Walsh - legendary rock star, GRAMMY award winner and rock & roll hall of famer - visited the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center on Veterans Day. Walsh took time out of his busy schedule preparing for this weekend’s VetsAid benefit concert to visit with Veterans and staff to thank all of them for their service.

Walsh’s father, Lt. Robert Newton Fidler, was a pilot in the United States Air Force who died in a mid-air collision over Okinawa in 1949, making Walsh a Gold Star family member.

“[I resonate with] Gold Stars for what they have to do to reboot their life,” Walsh shared. “Just from traveling so much around the United States and visiting Vets wherever I go, I just thought I could make a difference here. Been there, done that, and I’m proud and happy that I have a chance to thank Vets, and make sure they know there are a lot of us musicians that really care. They shouldn’t feel alone, we are all family.”

All proceeds from Saturday’s VetsAid concert will benefit regional Kansas Veterans.

Thank you for stopping in to share your time and thoughts with us, Joe!

Telehealth Technician Sandy Gomez and Behavioral Health Specialist Lori Shaw have been thanking Veterans at Dole VA’s community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC) in Parsons, KS, for their service in their own way for about a dozen years now.
“They put these [gift bags] together all on their own for Veterans Day,” clinic nurse manager Tamatha Osterbuhr told us.
It all started with a local youth group putting together gift bags for a couple years and bringing them to the Parsons CBOC to be distributed.
“I enjoyed seeing how much joy it brought to the Veterans to get this little token of appreciation,” Gomez shared. “After the youth group stopped bringing them, Lori and I took over doing them for our Veterans.”
Gomez has a nephew who is currently stationed in Japan with the U.S. Army, and several other family members who are Veterans.
“It’s no surprise they do this for Veterans Day every year,” Osterbuhr says. “They do such a great job for our Veterans every day!”

Thank you to all our Dole VA employees for your dedication to providing Veterans with the highest quality health care and services, and thank you to all Veterans for your service and sacrifice.

Veterans at Dole VA’s Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation and Treatment Facility (SARRTF) recently crafted vibrant tie-dye shirts to show their support for VA and Dole VA staff.

With logistical support from program coordinator Patrick Osborne, the Veterans planned the activity themselves, turning it into a fun team-building exercise that fostered a sense of belonging while supporting their recovery journey.

“[Their] enthusiasm for this project was inspiring,” Osborne said. “It gave them a chance to connect, create, and show gratitude while building skills for their recovery.”

Dole VA’s SARRTF program provides 24/7 care for Veterans with substance use disorders, offering evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy and mutual-help groups. The 6-week program provides enrolled Veterans with personalized recovery plans that address mental health, medical, and social needs like housing and employment.
