Thanks Ascension Via Christi!
Beyond The Call WFD has donated nearly $4,000 to Via Christi to support medical resources and screenings for local first responders through the Wichita Firefighter Wellness program.
Launched in February 2025, the Wichita Firefighter Wellness program provides Wichita firefighters and investigators with streamlined access to annual cancer screenings, cardiac and pulmonary testing, and comprehensive wellness exams. The program addresses the specific occupational hazards faced by fire personnel, whose work increases their risk for serious conditions such as cancer, lung disease and heart disease.
“We are incredibly grateful for this gift from Beyond the Call,” said Keisha Humphries, Via Christi's director of Oncology and Pulmonary Services. “The donation directly supports the specialized screenings and preventive care necessary to protect the health of those who serve our community every day.”
In addition to screenings, program participants receive support from a dedicated nurse navigator who guides them through the process, helping catch potential health concerns before they become serious. By prioritizing preventive wellness, the program helps ensure Wichita’s firefighters can continue serving the community at the highest level possible.
“Firefighters face risks that don’t end when the call is over, and the long-term impact on their health is real, measurable and too often overlooked,” said Dal Gains, co-founder of Beyond the Call. “We are proud to support Via Christi in helping to ensure that the people who protect our communities have every opportunity to live long, healthy lives.”
Beyond the Call also supports firefighters through its nonprofit gym, Station Zero, which provides fitness opportunities, camaraderie and peer-led support groups focused on mental health needs.
