New Parent Tips with Jessica, RN and Postpartum Doula

It’s okay to pause. If your baby is crying and you are feeling upset and frustrated, gently lay them down in the crib and take a moment for yourself. Step away, breathe deeply, and let your body reset. A few minutes of calm can make all the difference in how you show up next. You’re not failing—you’re human, and this is hard. Caring for yourself is part of caring for your baby. They don’t need perfection, they need you steady and present. Take the breath. Regroup. Then go back with a little more peace in your heart. You’ve got this.

Jessica is a mother-baby nurse and a part time overnight doula at Wichita Baby Co. With over 20 years of caregiving experience, she’s always ready to share her wisdom and instill confidence and calm in new parents! She and her family live in West Wichita.

Maddie, RN & shares her tips and tricks for newborn care!

Middle-of-the-night newborn care feels 10x harder when you’re wandering the house looking for wipes at 2:13am. 🙃

One of our favorite practical tips? Set up a simple night station on a rolling cart next to your bed. Stock it with diapers, wipes, a changing pad, burp cloths, extra sleepers, swaddles, pacifiers, ni**le cream, a water bottle, and any feeding supplies you need.

When everything has a home and stays within arm’s reach, you feel calmer, more prepared, and way less frazzled.

The goal at night isn’t perfection — it’s efficiency and preserving your energy. Future-you at 3am will be so thankful you set it up.

Maddie, RN & Postpartum Doula shares her tips and tricks for newborn care!

😴Dressing your newborn on a cool night doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple rule many parents find helpful: put baby in one more layer than you’re comfortable wearing. If you’re cozy in pajamas and a light blanket, baby might do well in footed sleepers plus a or .

😴Check their chest or back of the neck to gauge warmth — hands and feet are often cooler and can be misleading.

😴Avoid overheating, skip loose blankets in the crib, and adjust as needed through the night. Comfortable, not sweaty, is the goal. You’ve got this.

Maddie, RN & shares her tips and tricks for newborn care!

You’ve tried everything. You did everything “right”. , swaddle, paci, white noise, full feeds...and yet your newborn was still fussing every hour or two all night.

Assuming your baby has been evaluated for any health or feeding issues - sometimes that’s just a normal part of being a newborn baby who is going through frequent growth spurts.

You didn’t do anything wrong and you’re not failing your baby. This stuff is just HARD sometimes. Take shifts with your partner, nap during the day, or (we’re a little biased) hire one of our incredible newborn care specialists to come for a few nights to give you some respite. Hang in there, your baby will also have periods of time where they sleep well, eat well, and seem to be coasting along.

Maddie, RN & Postpartum Doula shares her tips and tricks for !

Newborns make a lot of noise—grunts, squeaks, whimpers, even little cries—while they’re actually still asleep. It can be tempting to scoop them up the second you hear a sound, but pausing for a moment can be helpful. Sometimes they’re just transitioning between sleep cycles and will settle right back down on their own. Giving them a brief chance to resettle doesn’t mean ignoring them; it means observing and responding thoughtfully. Of course, if the cry escalates or feels like a true “I’m awake” cry, that’s your cue. A short pause can lead to more rest for everyone.
