If I had to explain the difference between hypnobirthing and standard childbirth classes as simply as possible, it’s this:

Most birth classes teach you what to do once labor gets intense.
Hypnobirthing changes how you experience it before it even begins.

Think of it like this:
If you had a fear of elevators and knew you had to take one in 9 months… I could teach you how to cope with a panic attack once the doors close
or
I could use proven tools to reduce the fear so the panic never hits the same way.

That’s the difference.

GentleBirth doesn’t just focus on what to do once labor starts.
It uses CBT techniques, sports psychology, mindfulness, and hypnosis to create new neural pathways so you can approach birth feeling calm, grounded, and even excited.

So instead of your body going into panic mode when labor begins… your brain can say "yes! labor is finally here - I can't wait to meet my baby."

My next class on April 25th has 2 spots left! If you're interested in using hypnobirthing to prepare for your birth please leave me a comment or send a message and I'd love to share more!

Spontaneous vaginal birth is associated with the best outcomes for mothers and babies. To which all the independent/private midwives say.....DUH.

Evidence shows that who provides your care might be the biggest predictor of your outcomes.

Private OBs had startlingly low rates of spontaneous labour,(8.2%) whereas private midwives had the highest (82.3%).

If I were going to build my doula bag from scratch these are the first most affordable items I'd put in. They're all so simple but come in so handy - no matter what kind of birth I'm attending!

Over the years as a doula, I’ve noticed more and more parents trying to memorize birth. The positions, breathing patterns, tools just hoping one of them will be the thing that carries them through an unmedicated birth.

And I’m not saying those tools aren’t helpful. If they make you feel supported and prepared, absolutely use them!

But here’s what I keep noticing: we’ve started treating birth like something we need to learn, as if our bodies forgot how to do it and the right information will save us from failure.

The truth is your body already knows how to birth the same way it knows how to breathe, digest, and pump blood. You don’t need to master anything to give birth to your baby.

Your only job in labor is to listen inward, soften where you can, and meet one contraction at a time.

Real preparation isn’t about collecting more techniques.
It’s about rewiring the belief that birth is always scary, dangerous, or something to barely survive.

When we shift that programming,
the nervous system responds with excitement instead of fear and that changes EVERYTHING.

If you're ready to feel calm & confident going into birth I'd love to work with you 🙌

When I first became a doula, I truly believed that an unmedicated birth always meant hitting a breaking point.
Exhausted. Overwhelmed. In so much pain you think, "I can’t do this anymore."

And sometimes that does happen and it’s NOT a failure.
Birth IS challenging and no amount of preparation will guarantee a pain free labor.

But here’s what changed everything for me as a birthworker👇

I’ve seen, firsthand, that excruciating pain is not a given in every birth.

I’ve watched hypnobirthing transform labor into something calm, manageable… even enjoyable for some women.

When fear is removed from the subconscious, and the brain stops treating birth like a threat, the body responds differently.
Instead of your brain thinking "oh no, this is that very scary birth thing we've been worried about" and sending lots of pain signals to warn you, your brain says "oh yay, how exciting. I can't wait to meet our baby."

I know some people will roll their eyes at this ... I used to be one of them.
But birth doesn’t start in the body.
It starts in the brain.

That’s why hypnobirthing is so powerful.

If you want to learn how to work with your hormones, build deep trust in your body and train your brain for birth comment “ready” 🤍

This is probably the hardest thing to advocate for as a doula. You're probably going to have multiple conversations with multiple staff members urging you to have one just in case.

Let me beat you to the punch—yes, a saline lock can be placed with nothing hooked up to it and can act as a safety net if emergency medications need to be given quickly. For most people, that’s an easy yes.

BUT… for some women, an IV is the most painful part of their labor. For hypnobirthing parents, it can be the thing that most disrupts their spotlight of focus and inhibits intuitive movement.

And if a need for an IV does come up, we’re in the best possible place to get one quickly.

When all things are considered, it truly should be up to the person having the baby—even if it’s not the choice you would make for yourself.

Can we stop with the "prize" talk? We're not 5 no one is making their birth plan based on a pretend gold star at the end.
Instead let's tell her you believe in her, she's doing so well, and you're here for whatever she needs.

I’ve been praying for this baby with Kristin for months. Like… long before there was even a positive test, long before there was anything to announce. We talked about this baby, hoped for this baby, trusted that their timing would come.

Kristin is someone I deeply look up to — as a birth worker and as a mother. Getting to watch her family grow feels incredibly special, and this baby is already so deeply loved (I mean look at those smiles 🥹)

And the fact that I get to photograph her birth? I don’t even have the words for that honor. Getting to witness her bring her baby earthside is going to absolutely wreck me in the best way. I cry at births fairly often… and this one will definitely come with a lot of very happy tears 🤍

We hear the horror stories all the time.
At dinner tables.
In comment sections.
From people who mean well… but don’t realize the weight of what they’re passing on.

And I want to tell you something different.

Birth has the power to fundamentally change how you see yourself.
How you trust your body.
How you step into motherhood.

Not because it’s easy.
Not because nothing goes wrong.
But because being supported — truly supported — changes everything.

When you feel safe.
When you feel informed.
When someone believes in you even when it’s intense.

You don’t just give birth to a baby.
You meet a stronger version of yourself.

And you deserve to enter that experience held, prepared, and supported — not bracing for trauma.

✨ If you’re pregnant and want support that centers confidence, autonomy, and trust, send me a message or comment BIRTH.

You don’t have to do this alone 🤍

Fear → tension → pain.
It’s a real cycle.

When fear creeps in, your body tightens.
When your body tightens, sensations feel louder, sharper, harder to cope with.

That’s why hypnobirthing isn’t about ignoring the physical.
It’s about getting ahead of the fear first.

Mental training before physical coping.
Rewiring how your brain interprets sensation.
Teaching your nervous system that birth doesn’t have to be a threat.

Because when fear softens, tension releases.
And when tension releases, your body can actually do what it already knows how to do.

Birth starts in the mind.
Hypnobirthing helps you train it. 🤍
