Today Higher Ground celebrated the graduation of this year’s practicum students with a surprise breakfast! As part of their social work degrees these future social workers came to Higher Ground for hands on experience in addiction counseling. They learned from experienced counselors on how to run groups, how state policy choices affect clients, and how their own internal growth and healing increases their ability to help others. We know they’re all going to go on to do great things. ConGRADulations Alayna, Jodi, Lynsey and Tevin! Additional thanks goes to our Clinical Coordinator, Stephen Wagner, for manning the griddle!

Today marks Mary San Martin’s 28th anniversary as the Executive Director and founder of Tiyospaye Inc. and Higher Ground. On this day back in 1994, Mary started what would become Higher Ground’s Pueblo Path. This was the first culturally-competent, Spanish-speaking drug and alcohol addiction recovery program in the State of Kansas. It’s been a successful program to this very day!

On Friday, Higher Ground celebrated the retirement of long-time Assistant Director Shirley Toy. Shirley spent 24 years working hard to make Higher Ground the special place it is for clients and staff alike. Since Shirley’s from Texas, the staff celebrated with barbecue and decorated the office with stars! We’re so excited for her to move on to another chapter in her amazing life.

After two years of Covid hiatus, Higher Ground is excited to announce the reopening of our Ropes Course. Higher Ground uses experiential activities like obstacle courses to help clients develop positive coping skills through hands-on learning. Clients increase their ability to trust companions, problem solve, squash fears and form positive self-images by overcoming unique challenges. Clients also learn how to apply all of these lessons to their recovery process. Last week, four Higher Ground staff members embarked on a weeklong journey at Camp Horizon to learn how to facilitate the experience. The staff gained new skills such as belaying, knot tying, and the safety measures they need to know to help clients conquer the Ropes Course.

CLEARWATER CARES!
The tragic deaths of two former Clearwater HS students - one the result of a drunk driver, and the other from a drug overdose - inspired Sophomore, Alexis Elliott to start a substance abuse awareness campaign in Clearwater. She and the FCCLA gave out info for treatment services, organized a raffle, and had a Miracle Minute challenge donation during the local football game.
On Wednesday, Higher Ground was honored to receive a donation of over $750 from Alexis and her advisor, Ashley Weber. The donation was given to support recovery treatment services at Higher Ground for adolescents and adults.
