Rural Health Education and Services

Rural Health Education and Services Provides resources, programs, and support to health care providers and Kansas health care organizations to help strengthen the workforce in Kansas.

Rural Health Education and Services administers the Kansas Bridging Plan, a loan forgiveness program offered to primary care resident physicians in Kansas; Kansas Locum Tenens and Kansas Medical Resource, temporary coverage programs connecting health care providers with employers needing medical coverage; and the Kansas Recruitment and Retention Center, a centralized, statewide program specializing in health care workforce development, retention and strategic planning. Rural Health also hosts Kansas Career Opportunities, a career fair held in the fall in Wichita and Kansas City. Medical and health care students and resident physicians have the opportunity to visit with over 30 health care employers from all across Kansas. We offer funding for domestic and international healthcare projects and initiatives that serve vulnerable populations. The annual Rural Kansas Photo Contest attracts hundreds of amateur and professional photographers to share their unique view of our state and help us show why we love to Live, Work, and Play in Kansas.

A recent placement by our Recruiting and Retention team shows just how powerful the connections made at our health care career fairs can be.
At KCO-Salina in October, a registered nurse connected with a health care organization serving a medically underserved area of Wichita. He was seeking a family medicine nurse practitioner role and a traditional 8–5 outpatient schedule that would allow him to keep coaching and support his two young children.
That conversation quickly led to an interview, a site visit, and an accepted offer.

When health care organizations partner with Rural Health, communities benefit. We connect rural and underserved areas with providers who are the right match—just like Dr. Miranda Smith, a PrairieStar Family Medicine physician who is now delivering babies at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Reno County.

Exciting update for our maternal care department!

Dr. Miranda Smith (left) made history by being the first family medicine doctor to deliver a baby at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in 40 years.

Dr. Smith is one of two full-spectrum family medicine providers now offering maternal care in Hutchinson through a growing collaboration between PrairieStar and HRMC. The other provider, Dr. Catherine Jimenez (right) who practices at HRMC.

We’re pleased to share two recent successes from our recruiting team, including the placement of a specialty physician.
A family medicine with obstetrics physician has committed to serving in Clay County, and a pulmonary and critical care intensivist has signed on to practice in Reno County.
This is the work our recruiting team does every day: connecting health care organizations across Kansas with the providers they need so that every community has access to quality care.
