Meditation’s measurable effects on the brain
For the first time, researchers at Mount Sinai have directly recorded how loving-kindness meditation affects the amygdala and hippocampus—two brain regions essential for emotion regulation and memory. Using intracranial electrodes in epilepsy patients, the study found that even first-time meditators showed increases in gamma wave activity and changes in beta waves—patterns often disrupted in anxiety and depression. What makes this especially compelling is the ecological validity: participants meditated in a naturalistic lab environment rather than under artificial constraints. This isn’t just theory—these are observable neurophysiological changes, even in beginners. It’s a powerful reminder that simple practices like meditation can influence deep brain systems in meaningful ways.
