Yesterday, Conner and Bruce were part of the annual Crisis Intervention Training with the Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. They drew on their past experience and spoke with officers about how best to interact with someone who has a mental health condition in addition to autism or another developmental disability. They offered tips like "give me space," "give me time to answer your questions" and "remember that sometimes people do not have the ability to speak." Officers asked good questions and spent time in conversation after the class (and obliged Conner for his annual selfie! 📸)

🌎HAPPY EARTH DAY!🌎 Twenty years ago this spring Starkey began a small electronics recycling program, focusing on donations of computers, printers, cell phones and other items from the general public. It partnered with local companies that paid for the parts to be removed and sorted, allowing individuals at Starkey to be paid for the work of disassembling these items.

In 2010, Starkey was the first company in Sedgwick County to become certified under the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's new e-cycling requirements.

Today, Starkey contracts with Wichita State University and the KU School of Medicine-Wichita to recycle their equipment. Individuals at Starkey are paid minimum wage to process the electronic items, and a large number of individuals get the opportunity to do this work.

♻ Anyone is welcome to bring electronics to 4500 W. Maple between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday (no televisions, copiers or microwaves). For questions about specific items, call the e-cycling line at 316-512-4243. ♻

Last week, individuals from Starkey volunteered alongside Botanica's horticulture staff to plant raised beds with fresh herbs and ornamentals that will grow throughout the spring, summer and fall in the Sally Stone Sensory Garden.

The garden includes features to engage all five senses and is enjoyed by guests of varying ages, abilities and heights.

What a wonderful experience!

National Volunteer Week kicks off today, and we are so incredibly fortunate to have volunteers who spruce up our group homes, teach the individuals in our programs how to fish, create art and cook, and serve on our boards and event committees. 🏠🎨👨‍🍳🎣

Volunteers are an essential part of carrying out the Starkey mission every day, and they enrich our lives! We celebrate and appreciate you. 🌟

Darell and his Community Employment Specialist are pictured here walking into a job interview. He is seeking a job through Starkey's Supported Employment Program.

In the other photo, Darell is pictured getting ready to make a DoorDash delivery, his current job until he gets more permanent work. He is a go-getter!

Thank you to Wichita State University's College of Health Professions, Department of Dental Hygiene, for spending time with us yesterday to train on proper oral hygiene, what a healthy mouth should look like and risk factors for oral cancer.

Oral health is so important to overall physical health, and individuals with disabilities often don't have the same access to care as others, so good habits are essential. 😷🦷

Six clues in the morning, six clues in the afternoon. 🤔
Mystery clues that did not include a description, only a photo. ‼

Our scavenger hunt yesterday was challenging and so much fun! The colorful stones we had previously made were placed for us to pick up at our group homes and other facilities once we had solved the riddles. Turns out, we have some pretty smart detectives...🔍

We love to roll and stroll through the very accessible Sedgwick County Zoo, and it gives us a chance to connect with animals, learn about the range of different species and the connections between their ecosystems.

If we can't travel to Australia, South America or Africa, we can feel like we are there for a few moments! 🐨🦜🐘
