Cape Assist

Cape Assist Cape Assist is dedicated to preventing and treating substance misuse and related issues in CMC. Manlandro, Maureen Manlandro, Suzanne E. Sweikart, James J.

Cape Assist’s roots date back to 1981, when five individuals - Dr. James F. Callanan, and Dorothy Stricklin - were determined to educate the youth in Cape May County on the dangers of alcohol and the problems it caused if abused. They visited schools and made presentations; they advocated for funding and kept the issue of alcohol abuse in the forefront at community meetings. After receiving a $25,000 seed grant from the State Department of Health, the agency initially named the Cape May County Council on Alcoholism began offering services to aid both adults and youth, including providing Student Assistance Counselors in area school districts, public awareness campaigns, and promoting public policy news. Demand for services grew, and in 1987, the first full-time counselor was hired. That same year, the agency hosted its first Legislative Breakfast where the public and their elected officials met and discussed legislation on alcohol – a tradition that continues. The agency also rebranded that year to include the words “drug abuse”, becoming the Cape May County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Inc. It was determined that addiction was the problem, no matter what the substance. Prevention was emerging as a science-based field with state certification. Over the next five years, the agency experienced significant growth - in programs and staff. New services were added such as puppet curriculums for pre-school and elementary school children, a Service Provider Directory, a community resource center, a billboard project, and an annual conference for recovering women. In 1993, the agency rebranded again, as Cape Assist. The new name was easier to remember, more recognizable and reflected the organization’s positive work. In subsequent years, Cape Assist increased its programs and service offerings to include underage drinking programs (We Check for 21), Smoke-Free Dining Guide, children's after-school program (K.A.R.E.), and senior outreach services. The organization also introduced the Healthy Community Coalition and hosted events such as the Tree of Hope and the Peer Leadership Conference. Today, Cape Assist is strongly positioned as the leading prevention and treatment agency serving Cape May County residents. The organization’s work with adult and youth populations is vital to the community and it looks forward to providing such services for as long as they are necessary.

🎄✨ Holiday Cheer with LTHYC! ✨🎄

On December 17, the Lower Township Healthy Youth Coalition (LTHYC) Advisory Committee gathered at the Flight Deck Diner to celebrate the holiday season and another year of meaningful collaboration. LTHYC, an initiative of Cape Assist , works year-round to provide prevention trainings, resources, and free family events in Lower Township, all with a shared mission of reducing youth substance use through strong community partnerships.

Our “mighty little” coalition of about 30 dedicated members represents schools, law enforcement, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and local government. Guided by a simple belief in the power of trusted adults, we work together to help make our community a healthy place for kids to grow up.

This week, our Youth Resiliency Teams at both the middle school and high school got into the holiday spirit by making gingerbread houses. There was plenty of icing, a few sliding roofs, and lots of laughter. Just like community building, it was a little messy, but what truly holds it all together are relationships. The respectful, caring connections we build with one another shine through our youth.

💚 Get Involved!

-We welcome new Advisory Committee members
-Students are invited to join our after-school clubs: Richard M. Teitelman Middle School’s Wellness Club and the High School’s SADD chapter
-Parents and caregivers raising children in kinship families are invited to join a new program created to support this growing community in our county

For more information or to get involved, please contact Jodi Corbett at Jodi@CapeAssist.org.

Happy Holidays from all of us at LTHYC! 🎁❄️

Each year, the Great American Smokeout—first launched by the American Cancer Society in 1976—encourages millions of people to take a powerful step toward a smoke-free life. It’s a day of hope, support, and healthy choices, especially for the next generation.

To celebrate this important day, Cape Assist’s Lower Township Healthy Youth Coalition, along with partners from Lower Cape May Regional (LCMR) and the Lower Township Elementary School District (LTESD) (LCMR School District), teamed up for a joyful morning of reading, learning, and leadership.

LCMR Peer Leaders visited Carl T. Mitnick Elementary School to read “Rinsey the Raccoon,” teaching young students about the dangers of secondhand smoke through fun and storytelling. The day included:
• 440 K–2 students
• 440 Rinsey coloring books and crayons
• 30 youth leaders
• 29 classrooms
• 2 Rinsey mascots roaming the halls!

Huge thanks to The South Jersey Cooperative for the training and materials, to our Peer Leader advisors, Mr. Hindle, Ms. Eiler, and Ms. Knudsen, and to Cape Assist’s Madeline Maguire and Rachel Marroquin for coordinating the youth-led effort. Gratitude as well to Principals Daly and O’Shea and Superintendents Lasher and Cathcart for their incredible support.

From high-fives with Rinsey to big kids reading to little ones, the morning was filled with fun, learning, and leadership. Thank you to everyone who made this Great American Smokeout celebration so special!
