Snaxs the super user dog gets Dayton VA Medical Center ready for deployment
The Dayton VA Medical Center has an honorary member ready to help end users prepare for the facility’s Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) deployment in 2026: a golden Labrador with a love for snacks.
Snaxs (also known as Korey) is an eight-year-old certified service dog who has accompanied Joel Legawiec, a Veteran and member of Dayton’s health informatics team, since 2019. Snaxs was drafted to pass out lanyards and draw people over to sign-up sheets for training events. He has since posed for pictures at events and manned the change readiness table, where staff can get their questions answered regarding the transition to the Federal EHR system. He’s also been featured in the facility’s newsletter and staff emails and was a guest during its weekly fireside chats.
“The interest in our booth provided us the opportunity to answer questions and direct staff to appropriate resources,” said Legawiec. “That face-to-face interaction really helps us discuss the new Federal EHR more effectively. I am glad Korey was able to help with that goal.”
Amid the surge of information and activities surrounding the 2026 deployment, change leadership teams look for innovative ways to make pre-deployment events and engagements stand out with end users. Incorporating Snaxs into the mix offers a memorable and effective way to capture attention.
And as for Snaxs, well, he just loves the snacks that come with the job.

Happy Birthday United States Marine Corps 250 Years Old!

Brief History of the Corps
https://www.usmcu.edu/Research/Marine-Corps-History-Division/Brief-Histories/

On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that "two Battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776, under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas. The first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines, Nicholas remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant. The Treaty of Paris in April 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War and as the last of the Navy's ships were sold, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence.

* Tun Tavern history
• Founding: Tun Tavern was built in Philadelphia in 1685 and served as a hub for revolutionary activity.
• Recruitment: On November 10, 1775, Captain Samuel Nicholas began enlisting men to form the first Marine Corps at the tavern.
• Symbolic importance: It is remembered as the "sacred birthplace" of the Marine Corps.
• Location: The original tavern was located on Philadelphia's waterfront, but it was torn down in 1781, and its exact location is now marked by a sign.

Enhancing VA workflows with new EHR: Transforming medication administration

At VA, even small improvements in the medication administration process can have a major impact on patient safety and care. For almost 30 years, VA has used a combination of the Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) system and the Computerized Patient Record System (CRPS) to support medication administration.
Now, the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) is uniting these functions into one system, enhancing the core safety and quality measures that BCMA first introduced.
“Within the Federal EHR, it takes approximately two clicks to open the medication administration wizard from PowerChart and scan the patient ID to administer medications. Decreasing mouse clicks have been demonstrated to return time back to the care of Veterans. This eliminates the need for toggling between separate systems.” said Dr. Toni Phillips, chief nursing informatics officer for the Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office (EHRM-IO).
The move to the new Federal EHR system is all about keeping things consistent, making it easier for systems to work together, reducing the workload, and creating more room for future improvements. Each time the system is rolled out, it gives staff more time to focus on what really matters: taking care of Veterans.
