Mission Statement

Bacon Street creates healthier families and more resilient youth through evidence-based behavioral health and substance use services for adolescents, young adults, and their families. History

Since 1971, Bacon Street Youth and Family Services has been dedicated to youth and families in our community by providing behavioral health and substance use prevention and treatment services. We started as a safe space for adolescents to gather after school in Williamsburg and have since grown into a network of four offices offering programs and partnerships as unique as the communities we serve. Bacon Street's compassionate, community-focused approach has endured the test of time. Services

Bacon Street provides outpatient behavioral health and substance use treatment for pre-teens, teens, and young adults age 10-26. Our services include outpatient counseling for a wide range of mental health and substance use issues, including ASAM level 0.5 and 1.0, as well as case management. Our family-focused and community-inclusive model helps to identify the nature and extent of behavioral problems, explore new and healthier behaviors, and provide opportunities to experience new behavior in daily life. Through a variety of therapeutic modalities, young men and women work to achieve objectives they establish jointly with Bacon Street clinical staff. We accept most private insurances, as well as Medicare and Medicaid. A sliding scale fee program allows Bacon Street to make its services more widely affordable to anyone who qualifies based on income and family size. No family is ever denied services because of inability to pay. Donated funds are available to families meeting requirements for financial assistance.

🌿 As we continue celebrating Gratitude Month at Bacon Street… 🌿

We’re taking time to focus on the simple ways we can bring more gratitude into our daily lives. Practicing self-care, going on a mindful walk, or following a guided gratitude meditation are small steps that can have a big impact on our mental health and overall wellbeing.

November is National Gratitude Month! 💛

This month, we’re taking time to reflect on the power of gratitude — for the big moments, the small wins, and everything in between. Gratitude reminds us to pause, appreciate, and grow.

For more than five decades, Bacon Street Youth and Family Services has been dedicated to creating healthier families and more resilient youth in the Greater Williamsburg community through compassionate, judgement-free mental health and substance use services.

It is with deep sadness that we share that Bacon Street will be closing its doors on November 21st, 2025. However, we also want to celebrate what Bacon Street has achieved since we opened our doors on Bacon Ave. in 1971.

In its 54 years of operation, Bacon Street has helped thousands of youth navigate challenging times in their lives, and has brought hope and healing to thousands of families. We have championed the idea that everyone deserves access to mental health and substance use treatment by providing this care to youth and families regardless of their ability to pay for these services.

Additionally, our prevention programming has shown hundreds of people how to use Naloxone to respond to an opioid overdose, taught thousands of kids in local schools about the effects of substance use so they could make more informed choices, and has mentored teens and families to help them develop the skills they need to build resilience.

We are profoundly grateful to every youth, family, staff member, volunteer, partner, and donor who has been part of Bacon Street’s journey. Together, we have helped countless young people find hope, healing, and strength — and have built a more compassionate and resilient community in the process.

The decision to close was not made lightly. While financial pressures, staffing challenges, and reduced donations are common difficulties for organizations like ours, the rapidly changing landscape of funding and community need has compounded these challenges.

This has placed exponential strain on both our finances and personnel. Despite our unwavering commitment to serving adolescents, young adults, and their families, these combined pressures have made it impossible to continue operations at the level of quality and care our community deserves.

While Bacon Street’s chapter is coming to a close, our mission will live on in the work of the many incredible organizations and individuals continuing to serve youth and families across our region. It has been an absolute privilege to serve this community alongside all of you. We encourage our community to stay connected, continue advocating for mental health and prevention services, and carry forward the spirit of collaboration that has defined our work.

With gratitude and hope,
All of us at Bacon Street Youth and Family Services

Get ready for Red Ribbon Week!

Join us in preventing drug addiction this Red Ribbon Week, the nation's largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign.

Red Ribbon Week is a drug-use prevention campaign from National Family Partnership (NFP). NFP was established as a grassroots, nonprofit organization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drug prevention. Since its founding thirty years ago, NFP has devoted its efforts to the well-being of youth. Today, NFP is a national leader in drug prevention education & advocacy. Their mission is to lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturing the full potential of healthy, drug-free youth.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a semi-annual event organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible way for people to dispose of unused, expired, or unwanted prescription drugs.
Key information:
💡Purpose: The event educates the public about the dangers of medication misuse and provides a proper way to get rid of old medicines, including opioids. It is aimed at preventing drug diversion, protecting children and pets, and safeguarding the environment from water contamination caused by improper disposal.
✳️ How it works: On designated days in April and October, the DEA partners with local law enforcement agencies to set up collection sites where people can drop off their medications anonymously, with no questions asked.
💊 What to drop off: Acceptable items generally include pills, capsules, and patches. You should remove or black out your personal information from the labels on bottles before dropping them off.
💉 What to leave out: Items typically not accepted at these events include needles, syringes, illicit drugs, inhalers, and biohazardous materials.
📆 Year-round disposal: If you cannot make it to a Take Back Day event, many pharmacies, hospitals, and police departments offer year-round collection kiosks for safe and secure disposal
