W. Augustus "Gus" Wilson
W. Augustus “Gus” Wilson, 87, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 30. He will be greatly missed.
Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on September 23, 1938, Gus lived his entire life in the city he loved. He was the son of the late Theodore R. and Dorothy V. (Basey) Wilson. A 1958 graduate of Williamsport Area High School, he later attended St. Augustine College in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he studied Theology.
Gus proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1962, and continued his service in the Army Reserves from 1962 until 1986, completing more than 28 years of dedication to the nation.
After graduating from the police academy, Gus was sworn into the Williamsport Police Department on August 8, 1963. He was promoted to Detective, Second Class, on January 1, 1969; to Sergeant on July 7, 1973; and to Agent on February 12, 1980. Over the course of his 34-year, four-month career, he served as an Arson Investigator and Juvenile Officer, and in 1984 was named the Williamsport Exchange Club’s Police Officer of the Year for his arson-related investigations. Gus retired on December 31, 1997, after a lifetime of serving the Williamsport community.
A devoted member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Gus served faithfully as Verger Emeritus. He was also an active member of St. John Masonic Lodge #26, the Ni**od Consistory #9 of Harrisburg Pa, the National Fraternal Order of Police Williamsport Lodge #029, American Legion Post 1, the Scottish Rite, and the Central PA Diocese on Drugs. Gus is survived by his four children: Charles M. Wilson of Palmdale, California; Anne-Louise Wilson of Washington, D.C.; Kerry C. Wilson of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and Lauren M. Wilson of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by eight grandchildren—Diondre, Dominque, Quintin, Quincy, Q. Augustus, Rebekah, Sloane, and Sabeen—along with many great- and great-great-grandchildren; the mother of his eldest four children, Charliese E. Wilson; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
