He was a star soccer player throughout his high school years. His Senior year, he was named Conference Player of the Year and Regional Co-Player of the Year, and received the Coach's Award as well. Matthew tried to find his way through life after high school, not knowing what direction he wanted to take. He succeeded in obtaining a Certificate in Business and a Certificate in Auto Body from Edgecombe Community College before finding his interest in landscaping.

He entered the Turf Management program at Wayne Community College and later transferred to Guilford Technical Community College where he continued with Turf Management studies.
