Rake without the ache! Raking leaves is a common fall time activity that needs to get done regularly. Although this is true, many people are raking their leaves wrong, making a visit to our office necessary to adjust the spine and eliminate back pain often felt after cleaning up the yard. Here are a few tips in avoiding back pain while raking and get the chore

1. Switch hands while raking - preventing muscle exhaustion
2. Use the right rake- one that is not too short or too long
3. Don't overreach/extend the arms, step into the movement
4. Wear supportive shoes
5. Bend at the knees rather than at the waist, keeping your back straight
6. Warm up/ stretch before raking
7. Take breaks & drink lots of water- allowing your body to process so it does not get overworked

Sciatica is a debilitating condition caused by complications of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. The nerve controls the muscles on the back of the knee and lower leg and it also provides sensation to the back of the thigh, leg and the sole of the foot. Sciatica happens most to people in their 40’s but can affect anyone if they have experienced a trauma, such as a work incident or work accident. Sciatica pain is often aggravated by twisting, sitting for long periods of time, and lack of exercise.

Ways to manage your sciatica can consist of: Icing for 20 minutes at a time, practicing good posture, light exercise/stretching such as core strengthening, lifting properly, and Chiropractic adjustments. Recovery from Sciatica is possible in most cases.
