Strong calf muscles are important for healthy leg veins because they play a vital role in aiding blood circulation. The calves act as a pump, contracting and relaxing with each step, helping to push the blood back up towards the heart. When the calf muscles are weak, this pumping action becomes less efficient, resulting in poor blood flow and increased pressure in the veins. This can lead to the development of varicose veins or venous insufficiency, or both, which are conditions associated with compromised blood flow.

Furthermore, strong calf muscles help maintain proper venous tone. Venous tone refers to the tension within the walls of the veins, which allows them to constrict and dilate effectively to facilitate blood flow. Weak calf muscles can result in reduced venous tone, leading to increased chances of blood pooling in the legs. This can cause discomfort, swelling, and the development of spider veins and varicose veins. Therefore, having strong calf muscles is crucial for promoting optimal blood circulation and maintaining healthy leg veins.

The lateral subdermic venous plexus. What is it ?

This plexus lies in the subdermal/subcutaneous layer (just beneath the skin, in the hypodermis). It forms part of the superficial venous system of the leg.

Thigh component — Drains inferiorly (downward) toward the knee.

Calf component — Drains superiorly (upward) toward the knee.

Both components converge at the knee level and empty into the deep venous system (typically the popliteal vein) via perforator veins.

It often connects to or includes tributaries related to the vein of Albanese (a perforating vein in the lateral knee region, also known as the lateral venous star or Giacomini’s vein extension in some contexts).
This plexus is not routinely emphasized in standard anatomy textbooks (which focus more on major saphenous systems), but it is visible on high-resolution duplex ultrasound, especially in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.

Why is corona phlebectatica and why is it important ?

Corona phlebectatica is “crowning of the ankle with veins”. It is a hallmark of untreated chronic venous insufficiency and increases risk for venous ulceration.

If you have an ankle that looks like this, please seek evaluation and consultation.
