It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard “Bear” Perry, age 49, who lost his six-month battle with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Bear was born on April 25, 1976, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Connecticut. He passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his family home in Uncasville, Connecticut.

He was the beloved son of the late Bernard “ Bernie” L. Perry II and Elaine (Francis) Perry. Bear is survived by his cherished daughter, Amiah Skye Perry of Norwich, Connecticut; the love of his life, Kristen Beers of Lebanon, Connecticut; his sister Kim Mahoney and brother-in-law Mitch Lawson of Plainfield, Connecticut; his sister Bernice Perry and brother-in-law Kevin Brackett of Perry, Maine; his niece Patricia Barber and grandnephew Zayvion Hayes of Norwich, Connecticut; and his nephew David Barber and wife Lexy Lowen of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and former brother -in-law Donald Barber. He is also survived by aunts, an uncle, countless cousins, and many beloved and devoted friends.

Bear, a member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Perry Maine, will be remembered for his deep love of family, animals and his beloved dogs over the years, Bud, T***s, Baine, Blood, Diesel, and Asia whom he considered his family. He was incredibly funny, with a mischievous sense of humor, and took great joy in pulling pranks, dressing up in costumes, and playfully scaring those around him—always with a grin and a laugh to follow. He was known for his boundless energy, zest for life and adventure. He had a lifelong love of swimming, fishing, automobiles, and motorcycles, and was a daredevil from childhood—earning the nickname “Evel Knievel.”

Throughout his chemotherapy treatments and extended stays at Hartford Hospital’s acute medical oncology unit, Bear’s warmth, humor, and spirit left a lasting impression on those who cared for him. The nurses affectionately referred to him as “Care Bear” or “Teddy Bear,” a testament to the comfort, laughter, and kindness he brought to others even in the most challenging moments.

Bear also had a deeply compassionate and sensitive heart. He was profoundly affected by those who were downtrodden by hard times, loss, grief, adversity, or illness. He carried the pain of others with him and felt deeply for those struggling through sickness or suffering of any kind. Always concerned for the poor and the indigent, Bear would give his last dollar to anyone in need. Helping others came naturally to him, and his generosity, empathy, and quiet acts of kindness touched many lives, often without recognition.

Bear deeply valued his family and friends, and his presence, laughter, and larger-than-life spirit will be profoundly missed by all who truly knew and loved him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Norwich, Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bear’s memory to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, in support of Burkitt’s Lymphoma research. https://share.google/wkRSw65uofg8ULh36
