Student volunteers have long been a part of EDD Adaptive Sports programs. College students volunteer 1:1 with EDD athletes and lead clinic activities. We have partnered with college athletic teams, staff and students since 2004 when we offered our first adaptive soccer clinic with Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. Today, we have active student volunteers from Castleton University, Hartwick College, Saint Michael’s College, SUNY Delhi and SUNY Morrisville.
More recently, individual students have completed internships with EDD Adaptive Sports and stepped up to organize their own community events for athletes with disabilities. Last fall, students from Saint Michael’s College organized an adaptive field day as a business class project. They put together an afternoon of field games for local students with disabilities. Participants played soccer, floor hockey, basketball, wallyball and kickball. It was a memorable afternoon led by Colby Jordan, Dante Moran, Nathan Imbergamo, Austin Lilley, Sean McGurn and Myron Prograis. Visit eddfund.org to see a video from field day!
Former EDD interns Bridie McNamara and Meghan Dieterle will graduate from Saint Michael’s College this spring. They completed social media and communications internships with EDD in 2017-2018, and led our Fall 2019 Soccer Clinic.
For the third consecutive year, we are partnering with Hartwick College on their Introduction to Grant Writing class. Senior Hannah Warren is working with Executive Director Gretchen Owens on research and a grant application to augment our programs. In Spring 2019, Hartwick College student Allison Schroeder wrote a successful proposal to the O’Connor Foundation to support our lifetime sports programs. Ally enjoyed working with EDD Adaptive Sports so much that she pursued an internship with Hartwick’s Grant Officer. This spring, she is the teaching assistant for the Introduction to Grant Writing class.
Students from SUNY Delhi volunteer at lifetime sports programs, most recently snowshoeing, kayaking and parachute games. We collaborated with SUNY Delhi on 4 programs in 2019, allowing EDD to offer new activities and reach new program participants. Students in the Natural Resource Recreation and Sports program have the option to take an adaptive recreation class. This spring, students in that class will gain more hands-on experience by volunteering at EDD Adaptive Basketball and Swimming programs.
We are fortunate to collaborate with so many dedicated student volunteers. Some of these volunteers will go on to lead their own programs and coach their own teams. Our hope is that their experiences with EDD Adaptive Sports stay with them, and help guide them toward more inclusive sports programs in the future.
