I had so much fun visiting three classes at Little Sunshine's Playhouse and Preschool of Willowbrook last week to talk about how to take care of their teeth. I was also very impressed with some college-level biology questions about cavity-causing germs! Thank you for inviting me and my Crocodile friend! -CK-

We did a thing!

We were asked by our sweet patients, Julia and Maria, if we could donate toothbrushes to children in Ukraine. So we put together a box of brushes and floss to drop off at their school, St. Isaac Jogues Hinsdale!

Since conflict began in February, I couldn't stop thinking about it and I was looking for any ways to help. Maybe because it reminded me of stories my grandma used to tell me about having to leave their homes behind with babies on their backs and flee to south during Korean War. She still remembered exactly where she dropped her entire jar of homemade soy sauce and cried for days, 40+ years later!

I pray that all supplies that were gathered for the children will arrive there safely and become helpful, and that they wouldn't need to be away from their homes for too much longer. And I pray for my patients who were looking to visit their grandparents in Ukraine this summer, and hope that their families are safe, waiting for them to visit soon.

Thank you, girls, for giving me a chance to help.

It's that time of the year again! In Illinois, all children starting kindergarten or are moving up to second, sixth, or ninth grades will need to submit Proof of School Dental Examination Form. Also, if your children are new to Illinois schools this fall, you will be asked to submit it regardless of their grades.

Please bring it to their visits for us to complete it at the end of the appointments. If you don't have it, please let us know in advance so we can prepare one for you. In case you don't know what that form looks like, Panda here can share his with you.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there!

Last Friday, we gave carnations to our patients to have them give them to their mothers. In South Korea where I'm from, we celebrate Parent's Day on May 8th. Children of all ages pin carnations on the chests of their parents before they head off to work, so that they can show them off proudly. It has been over 20 plus years since I had to rely on my little brother to do the deed from both of us, and especially after what we have been through in the last 12+ months, it was particularly tough to be away from my parents on this Parent's Day. To celebrate in my own little way, I prepared little carnations (unfortunately I couldn't find carnations like the ones I would get for Parent's Day in Korea) for the children to give to their parents with a little note that explained what they were for.

Last year has been one of the toughest times for all of us, trying to adjust to the new norm at work while trying to make sure our children are learning properly and safely. At times we had to be an IT specialist to make sure our kids' remote learning goes flawlessly, and we had to learn to be a seamstress to try to make masks that will fit their little faces.

As the light at the end of the tunnel seems to get brighter and brighter, I would like to say let's pat ourselves on our backs and celebrate this Parent's Day/ Mother's Day. It wasn't always easy, and it wasn't always perfect, but thank goodness things are finally starting to look better! Let's hope we can soon go back to how things used to be when kids' biggest gripe was not getting as much screen time as their friends or that they are LITERALLY the ONLY kids in school without cell phones.

Happy Mother's Day/Parent's Day, everyone. I hope you are having an amazing weekend.

Couple of days ago I found my mask twin! And of course I had to take my regular masks off and put this one on to get a picture with my mask twin, Nash!

Thank you, DuPage County Health Department, for trying to help me look as cool as Nash! And Nash, I know you used to tell me my big head makes it hard for you to watch TV during your visit, and man, it looks even bigger next to you! 🤣

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

We received a surprise Valentine's Day gift from one of our patients last week. A hand-made Valentine's Day sign, complete with teeth (anatomically correct, may I add), a toothpaste, and a brush! Thank you so much, Juan, for an awesome decoration for the office!

Sorry about the aggressive cropping. I did not know how I look in that gown until I saw a picture of myself. Pandemic hasn't been very good to me, I suppose...😳 Maybe little less heart-shaped chocolates for this guy!

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas! Please be safe wherever you may be during this holiday season.

We often get questions about what we are doing to treat our patients safely during this pandemic. We are excited to share some of what we are doing with help from the Molar Bear family! (If you are curious at all about how Dr. Kim made these bears, be prepared for him to talk your ears off!)

Dear Patients and Families,

In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, Illinois State Dental Society has recommended dental offices to postpone all elective dental treatment and procedures. Therefore, starting tomorrow, March 17, we will be closed until March 31, per ISDS’s recommendations. We will keep you updated if there are any changes to these recommendations.

If true dental emergencies arise during this time, please contact our office at (630)570-0858. If your child needs to visit our office for an emergency visit, please follow the new guidelines posted below.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We hope that our collective effort will help stop the spread of the virus.
Stay safe, everyone.

Sincerely,

Cal Kim, DDS

Dear Patients and Families,

We know that anxiety about the COVID-19 pandemic is increasing with each passing day. We felt that it was important to reach out to our patients and families to let you know how our office plans to manage this situation.

At Willowbrook Dentistry for Children, health and safety of our patients, their families, and our staff members are our top priority. For this reason, we take pride in following very strict infection control protocols and universal precautions, which help prevent spread of any illnesses within our facility. In this time of uncertainty, we decided to take extra precautions in order to protect our patients and staff members.

1. If you, your child, or any close family members are sick or have traveled outside of the country in the last 14 days, please contact us to reschedule your appointments without penalties. If your child presents to our office with coughing, sneezing or fever, you will be asked to reschedule, no exceptions. In case we need to reschedule your children’s visits, we will do our best to accommodate your schedule and bring them back in a timely manner.

2. If it is possible, please try to avoid bringing siblings, relatives, or grandparents to your child’s appointment. If it is not possible to do so, we will ask you to remain in the waiting area with your other family members until your child’s procedure is completed in the treatment room.

3. Your children will notice that their favorite play area is temporarily closed to avoid unnecessary person-to-person cross contamination. Please bring their favorite book or toy they can enjoy while waiting, and we will try our best not to keep you waiting for long. We have also rearranged our chairs in the waiting area to minimize unnecessary close contact.

These decisions were made in accordance with CDC guidelines, and we will be closely monitoring for any changes in state or federal guidelines regarding COVID-19. We will keep you updated if any changes to our schedule are necessary in the future.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please stay safe and wash your hands!

Sincerely,

Your Team at Willowbrook Dentistry for Children

Happy Paczki Day! I celebrated my Polish heritage (huh?!?!?!?) by visiting Sylvia's Bakery in Darien during lunch time. If you are enjoying your custard-filled goodness today to celebrate Fat Tuesday like me, make sure you brush and floss your teeth before you go to bed! Sorry, it's my job requirement... -CK
