So now that I have had an opportunity to absorb and reflect on the new Dietary Guidelines, here are some of my thoughts:

-Not a single RD was included on the panel
-Only 21% of references are from peer-reviewed nutrition journals (62/289)
-We haven't followed the "decades-old pyramid" in well over a decade!
-There is no war on protein!!!
-The recommendations for 1.2-1.6 g/kg protein in literature are meant for acutely ill adults
-Full fat is inconsistent with caloric moderation
-The statement that linoleic acid (omega-3) is not better for cardiovascular health that saturated fat is blatantly false
-There is limited focus on fiber and plant-based protein (such as beans/lentils/legumes)
-These recommendations are ketosis-inducing
-2-4 servings of grains per day will not provide the minimum of 130g CHO needed to fuel the brain
-A kindergartener could do a better job with clip art!
-Consideration of health equity MUST remain a priority!
-We as RDs have our work cut out for use to re-educate the public!
