IAFF Local 1590 Official Facebook of the Wilmington Firefighters Association IAFF Local 1590. During the workweek, the population swells to in excess of 150,000 people.

Since December 17, 1965, we have been the local affiliate of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Our Local represents approximately 265 active and retired members of the Wilmington Fire Department. We fight for the rights of firefighters in the City of Wilmington and are dedicated to the betterment of our community. Not only does that involve defending labor rights, engaging in concrete legislative action, and providing a voice for the firefighters, but it also includes helping our community. Some of our community events include Aid to the families of fallen firefighters and first responders, Wilmington Classic hockey game benefiting the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, American Cancer Society, Christmas Toy Drive for Nemours AI DuPont Hospital for Children, coat drive, canned food drives, blood drives, and assisting with our local organizations. The City of Wilmington is the State of Delaware's largest city, and the only one with a fully paid professional firefighting brigade. The members of the Wilmington Fire Fighter's Association protect a community of about 71,000 citizens within a 17-square-mile area. Wilmington is comprised of everything from mansions to row homes, schools, and daycare centers, industrial and manufacturing properties, restaurants, hospitals, a prison, various waterways, the Port of Wilmington, a wastewater treatment facility, a landfill, I-95 and I-495, and high-rise offices and residential buildings. Our members work in six (6) fire stations within the City and provide firefighting and emergency medical services, specialized search & rescue services; along with a Fire Marshal's Office for Arson/Fire investigation, and fire education & prevention programs. They respond to over 20,000+ calls for service each year. Local 1590 Mission Statement

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook.

Wilmington Firefighters stopped by Troop 6 today to leave flowers in his honor, just a small way to show respect for someone who wore the uniform, did the job, and is now being mourned by family, friends, and coworkers across Delaware. Our thoughts are with everyone who loved and served alongside him, including the Delaware State Police and the Delaware FOP State Lodge.

🔥 A major win for firefighters — and for our members 🔥

The IAFF-backed Honor Act has passed the U.S. Senate, officially recognizing occupational cancer as a line-of-duty death. This long-overdue change ensures that families of firefighters lost to job-related cancers will no longer be denied federal death and education benefits.

This matters to Local 1590. Cancer remains one of the most serious risks our members face, and this legislation validates what firefighters have known for decades — the job doesn’t always end when the shift does.

This victory is the result of sustained advocacy, solidarity, and a refusal to accept the status quo. We honor our fallen brothers and sisters by continuing to fight for protections, benefits, and accountability at every level.

In a historic development, the U.S. Senate has passed the IAFF-endorsed Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act as part of the National Defense Authorization Act

Yesterday, our members on the B Platoon responded to a cargo ship fire at the Port of Wilmington.
This incident is a strong reminder of the wide range of emergencies our firefighters are trained and prepared to handle — from structure fires to complex marine incidents.

We extend our appreciation to all responding agencies whose coordination and teamwork were essential to safely bring the situation under control. Multi-agency cooperation is critical during large-scale incidents like this, and yesterday’s response showcased exactly that.

We also want to thank our members who answered call-backs to staff additional apparatus and ensure the city remained fully covered while on-duty crews operated at the scene. Your dedication and professionalism make a real difference.

Proud of the work our members do every day — on land, on the water, and everywhere in between. Stay safe.
