In an attempt to raise awareness about the dwindling bilby population, and promote native wildlife over European-introduced rabbits, confectioners in Australia have taken to making chocolate likenesses of this small rabbit-size marsupial.
The bilby once occupied 80% of the continent, but now only exists in a few remote regions in Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, and is considered vulnerable to extinction. This is due to habitat loss and predation by foxes, cats, and other introduced species.
Australians can scoff at will, knowing that every bite they take is helping to save an endangered species.
