Bariatric Surgery Is Safe & Proven

Bariatric surgery is one of the most studied and effective treatments for obesity—and today’s procedures are safer than ever.

In fact, modern bariatric surgery has a safety profile similar to common surgeries like gallbladder removal. And for many patients, the benefits extend far beyond the scale: improved diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnea, and quality of life.

Confidence starts with facts—and we’re here to share them.

A new real-world study presented at the 2025 ASMBS Annual Scientific Meeting shows that metabolic and BARIATRIC SURGERY LEADS TO ABOUT FIVE TIMES MORE WEIGHT LOSS after two years compared to weekly GLP-1 injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide.

🔍 What the study found:
Patients who had sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass lost an average of 58 lbs over 2 years.
Patients on GLP-1 medications lost an average of 12 lbs over the same time.
Even patients who stayed on GLP-1 therapy for a full year saw only 7% total weight loss, much lower than surgical results.
👩‍⚕️ Lead study author Dr. Avery Brown noted that while clinical trials show higher results for GLP-1s, real-world weight loss tends to be significantly lower—often because up to 70% of patients discontinue the medication within one year.
💡 Bottom line:
For many patients, metabolic and bariatric surgery remains the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity.
If you’re exploring your options or want to learn more about what might work best for you, our team is here to help. 💚
